West Virginia men’s basketball made its first-ever trip to Glenville State on Friday night, and let’s just say the Mountaineers made themselves right at home. With around 3,000 fans packed into the Waco Center, WVU rolled past the Pioneers 103-66 in its second exhibition game of the preseason. Before tipoff, both programs honored the late Ike Morris, a supporter of both universities. WVU head coach Ross Hodge presented Morris’ family with a framed Mountaineer jersey, giving the night a special meaning beyond basketball. Glenville, Meet the Mountaineers WVU wasted absolutely no time reminding everyone which team plays in the Big 12. The Mountaineers jumped out to a 29-6 lead, putting together a 21-0 scoring run that had Glenville State playing catch-up almost immediately. Glenville State fought back and cut the deficit to 13, but WVU was not interested in making things too interesting. By halftime, the Mountaineers were up 48-26, and they kept their foot on the gas in the second half. A Different Team Than Maryland? Coming off a tough exhibition loss to Maryland, WVU had a few things to clean up. And according to the players, they knew exactly what needed to change. When I asked what the team did differently against Glenville State, freshman guard Miles Sadler pointed to a change in intensity. “I think our group showed better aggression,” Sadler said. “Last game, a couple points in the game, we weren’t as aggressive as we needed to be, and I think we did a good job showing that today.” Brenen Lorient had a slightly different takeaway, pointing to improvements on the boards and taking care of the basketball. “Personally, I definitely think we rebounded the ball better as a team,” Lorient said. “Today we took care of the ball better too as guards, like, that’s what we take pride in.” And the numbers backed that up. The Mountaineers dominated the rebounding battle 43-21 while committing just 10 turnovers. Sure, it was against a Division II opponent, but those are exactly the improvements WVU needed to see. Everyone Gets a Piece of the Action Sadler led the way with 18 points, six rebounds, and six assists in just 22 minutes. Lorient added 14 points, Martin Somerville chipped in 11, and Mouhamed Sylla and Javan Buchanan each finished with 10. But it was not just the usual names getting involved. WVU got 47 points from its bench, and 12 of the 13 Mountaineers who entered the game managed to score. When I asked about getting everyone off the bench and into the game, Hodge made it clear that every player has a place in his program. “We have different roles, like all of us have different roles, but everyone has equal value,” Hodge said. He specifically praised Max Olejasz, MJ Feenane, and Jelani McKoy for the work they put in during practice, even when it does not always translate into playing time. “
