LARAMIE, Wyo. — In a mistake-fueled performance, the Hawaii football team fell to Wyoming 27-10 today at War Memorial Stadium.Backup running back Markell Holman scored his first two touchdowns of the season to boost the Cowboys in front of a homecoming crowd. The Warriors fell to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the Mountain West. The Warriors closed to 20-10 on Micah Alejado’s 20-yard scoring pass to tight end Devon Tauaefa with 12:11 to play. They got the ball back. But on fourth-and-long, Sean Olvera-Harle was wide right on a 54-yard field-goal attempt.A disastrous start to the second half epitomized the Rainbow Warriors’ struggles. The Warriors could not capitalize on a 74-yard drive to open the second half. The thing is, the Warriors needed to go 75 yards.Alejado completed his first 10 passes of the half (an 11th was intentionally thrown away) to advance the Warriors to the 1, from which they faced a fourth-and-1. The Cowboys pressured Alejado out of the pocket and forced to throw incomplete. On the ensuing possession, Warriors appeared to stop the Cowboys at the 10 and force a punt. Bart Edmiston’s shanked punt gave UH possession at midfield. But the officials ruled that the Warriors had two players with identical numbers on the punt-return unit. A pre-snap penalty was retroactively called, giving the Cowboys a first down to continue their drive.Tyler Hughes completed throws of 26 and 19 yards, the latter embellished by a 15-yard targeting penalty, to move the Cowboys to the UH 18. From there, Holman broke right, broke a tackle and raced the rest of the way to make it 20-3 with 14:52 to play.In a symbolic ending to Hawaii’s dismal first half, the final 40 seconds were allowed to “run off” because a Warrior suffered a non-serious injury with no timeouts remaining. The Warriors did not get the calls nor the yards in entering the intermission with a 13-3 deficit. In a debatable play with the score tied at 3, UH safety Kona Moore appeared to punch the football free from tight end Jake Wilson following an apparent reception. UH recovered the ball and raced 50 yards for what appeared to be a scoop-and-score. But after a review, it was determined Wilson did not have control of the ball. The Cowboys drove to the UH 5, from where Erik Sandvik kicked a 23-yard field goal, his second of the game.Later, tight end Kyle Frendt’s 27-yard reception set up the first half’s only toucdown. Holman’s 1-yard run up the gut extended the Cowboys’ lead to 13-3 with 3:05 left in the half. The Warriors’ only first-half points came on Sean Olvera-Harle’s 28-yard field goal. The Cowboys amassed 205 yards in the first half, including 118 yards on Tyler Hughes’ 10-for-15 passing.—
