XRP Logo Lands on Kansas Jayhawks Jerseys as Ripple Inks Multi-Year Deal

Ripple, the payments company behind the XRP cryptocurrency, has struck a multi-year sponsorship agreement with the University of Kansas Athletics that will see the XRP logo appear on the jerseys of all KU athletic teams. In addition to branding on uniforms, XRP will be named the official cryptocurrency of Kansas Athletics as part of the deal. “This era of college athletics demands innovative, forward-thinking partnerships,” said Travis Goff, the University of Kansas Director of Athletics, in a press release. Goff added that Ripple recognizes the Jayhawks’ wide reach and passionate fan base and is proud to choose Kansas Athletics as a premier platform to introduce XRP to millions of sports enthusiasts.
Beyond the jersey sponsorship, Ripple will fund educational programs for Kansas student-athletes that focus on both traditional finance and digital assets. The company also aims to connect KU graduates with opportunities in technology, helping to bridge the gap between education and industry. Kansas Men’s Basketball Coach Bill Self commented, “This is a bold move for college athletics, and it reflects the commitment to innovation. We will ensure our players understand the significance of this partnership and how it can benefit them going forward.”
The deal also brings back a familiar link to Ripple, reconnecting the Jayhawks and the University of Kansas with Ripple President Brad Garlinhouse, a KU alumnus who once described watching Jayhawks games as a “guilty pleasure.” The sponsorship adds to a broader conversation about crypto sponsorships in sports, a field that has seen both high-profile successes and notable missteps.
The crypto industry’s branding history in sports has been mixed. For instance, FTX, the now-defunct exchange whose founder Sam Bankman-Fried was convicted of fraud, once secured naming rights to the stadium hosting the Miami Heat in 2021, only for the logo to be removed less than two years later. Similarly, Terra, another collapsed crypto network whose founder has faced legal consequences, inked a five-year deal with Major League Baseball’s Washington Nationals in 2022, and its logo remains visible at Nationals Park. Meanwhile, appetite for crypto sponsorships has ebbed and flowed, with Coinbase continuing a prominent sponsorship relationship with the NBA, and Ledger securing a deal with the San Antonio Spurs last year that placed its logo on jerseys and the arena floor throughout the season.
Market reaction to Ripple’s KU partnership suggests a cautious environment for XRP. Shortly after the announcement, XRP’s price declined by roughly 4%, underscoring that the impact of such marketing efforts may not translate into immediate price gains. XRP remains a top-6 cryptocurrency by market capitalization, currently valued around $67 billion. Its price trajectory has experienced notable volatility, including a high near $3.65 reached last year, followed by a substantial decline of about 71% from that peak to hover near $1.07 today.
Looking ahead, Ripple’s Kansas partnership could serve as a broader case study in how university-themed crypto sponsorships influence brand awareness, fan engagement, and long-term market performance for XRP. If the collaboration resonates with students, alumni, and sports fans, it could help expand XRP’s visibility beyond crypto enthusiasts and into mainstream sports culture. As with prior crypto-adjacent sponsorships, the ultimate impact will hinge on sustained program quality, educational initiatives, and the ability of Ripple to demonstrate tangible value for Kansas student-athletes and the broader KU community.
