The Cotuit Kettleers are finally gaining some momentum after a slow start to the Cape Cod Baseball League season. Cotuit sits at 7-12-2 and has won two consecutive games, snapping a six-game skid with an 8-4 victory over the Harwich Mariners on Thursday at Lowell Park. Notre Dame’s Noah Coy went 4-for-4 with a home run, five RBIs and two runs scored, and Alabama-Birmingham’s Landon Beaver added a 1-for-5 effort with two RBIs, helping erase an early 3-0 deficit with just two swings of the bat as two Harwich singles tied the game in the second inning. Cotuit then tallied eight unanswered runs on 12 hits and five walks. Stanford’s JJ Moran went 3-for-4 with a walk, three runs and an RBI, while Adam McKelvey of Georgia Tech settled down after surrendering three runs in the first inning, tossing three scoreless frames while yielding five hits and three walks and striking out four. Colin Larson of Boston College opened the scoring for Harwich with a leadoff homer, finishing 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs and an RBI, and Brayden Jaksa of Oregon went 3-for-5 with three RBIs for the Mariners.
In other Cape Cod Baseball League action, Yarmouth-Dennis, now 17-2-1, extended its dominance by shutting out Brewster, 13-0, in a showdown between the East Division’s top two teams. Yarmouth-Dennis’ Cade O’Leary, representing Florida State, started on the mound and worked four scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk with seven strikeouts. Nolan Bernard of South Florida earned the win, improving to 1-0 after pitching two scoreless innings with two strikeouts, permitting one hit and one walk. Brewster managed only six hits and five walks. Jay Abernathy finished 2-for-3 with a walk for the Whitecaps.
Dante Vachini, the leadoff hitter for Yarmouth-Dennis, had a standout day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, driving in three runs and scoring twice. He scored a run on a steal of home, then added a double in the third inning to drive in another run, and teammate Jake Souders (Samford) followed with a single to make it 4-0 in the fifth. Souders ended the game 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI as part of Yarmouth-Dennis’ three-game winning streak.
