It has not been a good stretch for the New York Yankees recently. While a few nights could be chalked up to a bout of clubhouse food poisoning, the bigger issue is that the team has been underperforming for longer than a few days. The offense has struggled, compounded by injuries, but the rotation has also slipped from its elite perch in the past month as a string of rough outings from the starters has produced large deficits that have felt nearly insurmountable. With that context, we asked at the start of the week which Yankee starting pitcher looked most concerning. Cam Schlitter was excluded from the options because he remains the clear ace of the staff, even if his latest outing looked shaky; we hope that is merely a blip rather than a sign of deeper trouble. He isn’t the focus today, though, as two other arms dominated the conversation. Gerrit Cole may not be this team’s ace this season, but he remains one of the staff’s pillars. After Tommy John surgery, there was always a chance he wouldn’t be fully 100 percent right away, but few expected him to start strong only to quickly crash back down to earth. He did hit some rust on the IL and is also adapting to reduced arm strength, yet coughing up four or five runs per start simply isn’t acceptable. The hope is that he’ll regain his form as he gets back into game shape, but right now he isn’t the Cole of old taking the mound every five days. Just behind Cole in the polling was Ryan Weathers, a notable drop-down in the rotation to the fifth slot. Although Weathers stood out as one of the more impressive Yankees arms in April and May, earning sustained consideration for a rotation spot, June has tempered that optimism. Across five starts this month, he posted a 5.55 ERA, cooling the early-season excitement about his durability and role.
