’You Can Put Me on Any Team’ — NBA Legend Hilariously Claims He Could Score 20 Points in Summer League ’Right Now’

The NBA Summer League is underway, with rookies showcasing their talents and proving they belong at the professional level. In the midst of the action, NBA legend Paul Pierce sparked a humorous debate by claiming that he could still put on a show if he joined the Summer League today. Pierce, renowned as one of the era’s elite scorers, built a storied career highlighted by 10 NBA All-Star selections, four All-NBA honors, a spot on the NBA All-Rookie First Team, a Finals MVP award, and an NBA championship. Over 1,343 regular-season games, he averaged 19.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per contest.
After retiring following the 2016-17 season, Pierce was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021. Nearly a decade removed from professional basketball, the 48-year-old believes he could still make a meaningful impact in the NBA Summer League. During the “No Foul Given” podcast on Wednesday, Pierce asserted, “I can get you a dub in summer league right now. I can get you 20 in the summer league right now. I’ve been watching every team. You can put me on any team in the summer league right now, and I can get you a dub.”
Pierce’s confidence is noteworthy given that typical Summer League rosters feature players aged 21 to 23, meaning he would be more than twice their age. While his comments were made in a lighthearted fashion, reaching the 20-point mark would still be an ambitious feat. In his final NBA season with the Los Angeles Clippers, Pierce averaged 3.2 points in 11.1 minutes per game across 25 appearances, shooting 34.9 percent from beyond the arc. Still, he believes his experience and basketball IQ could enable him to contribute meaningfully on the court.
“I’m in great shape right now,” Pierce insisted. “You get these little young rookies. I’ve got the IQ, bro. If you get me out there in a close-out situation with dribble penetration and a swing pass, I can make something happen. When the play is close-out, three things are going to happen: I’m either going to hit the shot, draw a foul, or dish an assist off the dribble. So you have a playmaker. Somebody who can create and get you out of the way. Yeah, I’m in that row right now.”
Whether Pierce could truly back up those claims remains a topic for discussion, but his remarks have certainly stoked conversation ahead of an exciting Thursday slate in the NBA Summer League. The night’s schedule features a notable matchup between the top two picks: No. 1 overall AJ Dybantsa of the Washington Wizards facing No. 2 overall selection Darryn Peterson of the Utah Jazz at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. This confrontation promises to deliver high drama and a compelling glimpse into the early-career trajectories of two prize prospects. As the Summer League progresses, Pierce’s playful boasts add an extra layer of intrigue to an event that often serves as a proving ground for budding stars and seasoned veterans alike, all contributing to the ongoing story of a league that thrives on new talent and familiar legends sharing the floor.
