Zack Wheeler expresses frustration over All-Star snub after striking out 14 Reds: ‘I feel like I’ve earned it’

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler has become one of the most vocal critics of the All-Star snub, and many around the league share his frustration. After delivering a dominant performance against the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday, striking out 14 and guiding the Phillies to a 4-1 victory, Wheeler did not hold back when asked about missing the All-Star rosters. The 36-year-old ace did not mince words, telling The Athletic that the omission “pisses me off” and that he feels he has earned a spot on the midseason showcase. “I felt like that was a reminder,” Wheeler said. “for whoever needs to be reminded. It pisses me off. It’s kind of BS. Maybe if I wasn’t necessarily right in (the All-Star mix), I wouldn’t be saying this. But I feel like I’ve earned it.”
His sentiment isn’t unfounded. Wheeler has been exceptional this season since returning from thoracic outlet decompression surgery. Over 14 starts, he owns a 2.28 ERA while fanning 98 batters in 87 innings. Despite a late start to the year due to his recovery, Wheeler ranks eighth in the league in pitcher wins above replacement (bWAR). The performance arc he has shown since his return has been robust, underscoring the case that he belongs among the game’s best as the All-Star break approached.
Wheeler isn’t the lone voice questioning the decision. After the initial roster announcements, Wheeler’s agent, B.B. Abbott, characterized the omission as “tone deaf.” The dissonance grows even louder with the All-Star Game scheduled to be played at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia this year. Five Phillies players earned spots on the roster and will take the field for their home fans, but Wheeler did not receive that same honor, much to the disappointment of local supporters and national observers alike.
There remains a pathway for Wheeler to join the festivities. In the days leading up to the All-Star Game, players frequently withdraw due to injury, rest, or other reasons, opening slots for replacements. However, Wheeler would face a significant procedural obstacle: because he is slated to pitch on Sunday, he would be ineligible to throw in the All-Star Game under current MLB rules. That constraint makes it unlikely he would be asked to participate as a replacement unless there are last-minute rule changes or exceptions granted.
Still, Wheeler has indicated a willingness to adapt if given the chance. He told CBSSports.com that he would be open to throwing an inning in the All-Star Game even if he pitches for the Phillies on Sunday. “I feel fine the second and third days (after a start), when I usually throw my bullpen,” Wheeler said. “So I’d be fine throwing an inning, but it’s not even an option, I guess.” His readiness to make himself available highlights his competitive drive and willingness to seize any opportunity that might come his way, even if it means bending the usual eligibility constraints.
The saga of Wheeler’s All-Star status illustrates a broader reality in baseball: with so much talent across the sport, snubs are a recurring theme, and some of the game’s best performers frequently find themselves on the outside looking in when rosters are announced. Wheeler’s case, however, sits at the center of a conversation about how performance is weighed against recognition, particularly for a player who has delivered elite numbers after surgery and a delayed start to the season.
If Wheeler maintains this level of performance, he could still leave this season with major hardware, potentially even winning a Cy Young Award without the benefit of an All-Star appearance to show for it. In retrospect, the most compelling form of payback might come not from the All-Star Game itself but from continuing to pitch at an elite level and proving the doubters wrong over the remainder of the season. For Wheeler, the frustration of being left off the All-Star roster could serve as extra motivation to keep performing at peak levels, grounding the argument that his omission was a misstep while adding another compelling chapter to a season that has already showcased his resilience and talent.
