Summer is here, and it’s everyone’s favorite time of the year: scouting season. Each year we kick off Summer Scouting to preview college football for Bucs fans, while also giving you a glimpse of players to watch and names to follow in the fall as Tampa Bay’s needs emerge. Will we focus on quarterbacks? Offensive tackles? Edge rushers? Absolutely. Because every NFL team will be drafting players from all positions, and it all matters where those players end up—whether with the Bucs, the Bears, or the Steelers. Our goal is to keep Bucs fans as informed as possible, so you’re ready for what the season and the draft may bring.
So, if you’re still with us, dive into our latest Summer Scouting report as we gear up for the fall. First up is a dual-threat quarterback with a compelling profile: Darian Mensah, from Duke, with a background that includes stints at Tulane and a transfer to Duke, followed by a move to Miami (FL). Mensah stands 6-3 and weighs in around 205 pounds, a 3-star prospect according to 247Sports. He served as captain at Duke, and his family ties in sports run deep—his twin sister played soccer at Oregon. His path also includes a rich athletic background, having played basketball in high school and moving across programs before landing at Duke and then Miami.
Mensah brings a substantial college résumé: 27 starts, 787 pass attempts, and 6,696 passing yards, with an average of 8.5 yards per attempt. He has demonstrated the ability to hit big-time throws and manage turnover-worthy plays, while posting an adjusted completion percentage around 76.1% at a depth of target of about 10.1 yards. He can deliver throws to every level of the field and has the burst to be a dual-threat when he chooses to use his legs. His passing game features good zip and the ability to thread throws into tight windows, complemented by pocket presence that allows him to extend plays and avoid pressure.
Darian Mensah is likely to be a name we’ll watch closely throughout the college season and into the draft process. In Miami’s high-powered offense, he has a real shot to compete for the quarterback1 spot in next year’s draft, given the talent around him and the system in place. He possesses the arm talent, vision, and awareness to thrive, and when necessary, his mobility adds another dimension for defenses to contend with. If Cam Ward emerges as a top option in this offense, the ceiling could be high for Mensah, especially considering how the offense is currently constructed.
