Marcus Rashford set to stay at Manchester United as £40m exit clause expires

Marcus Rashford’s prospects of staying at Manchester United this summer have improved. The Athletic reports that the forward’s £40 million release clause in his United contract has expired, meaning any potential sale would now require negotiations rather than an automatic trigger. At the moment, Rashford is on World Cup duty with England, who are set to face France in the third-place playoff on Saturday following their semi-final defeat to Argentina. He has started two of England’s seven matches in the tournament and scored after coming on as a substitute against Croatia.
Rashford is expected to return to United for pre-season after a three-week break following the World Cup. The 28-year-old spent last season on loan at Barcelona after losing his place at Old Trafford. He impressed in Spain, tallying 14 goals in 49 appearances across all competitions. Barcelona chose not to exercise the £26m option to sign the Manchester United academy graduate permanently. Instead, they opted to sign his England teammate Anthony Gordon in a deal worth £69m.
Rashford has not hidden his desire to return to Barcelona, but a reunion at Camp Nou now seems unlikely. The 28-year-old is regarded as one of the brightest talents to have come through United’s academy. Since making his senior debut in February 2016, Rashford has made 426 appearances across all competitions and scored 138 goals. However, he has not played for United since December 2024.
