3 NBA teams who are most improved entering 2026-2027 season

The NBA is reshaped from how it looked when last season wrapped up. Stars have shifted teams, contenders have deepened their rosters, and several franchises have overhauled their lines in a major way. With more moves still possible, three teams have done the most to upgrade themselves, entering the 2026-27 season looking far more formidable than they did just months ago.
First up are the Philadelphia 76ers. After clawing into the playoffs through the play-in last season, they now sit in position to contend for the Eastern Conference crown. Their offseason centerpiece was a blockbuster swap that sent Paul George and draft picks to acquire Jaylen Brown, who just posted the best season of his career and is in the prime years of his career. Although Philadelphia bid farewell to Quentin Grimes, Andre Drummond, and Kelly Oubre, they also fortified the roster with substantial depth. They added lockdown defender Dean Wade and a proven scorer in Anfernee Simmons, giving the team more versatility and scoring punch. If they can finalize a deal to bring LeBron James aboard, their championship aspirations could become a more tangible reality, potentially making them the favorites to emerge from the East.
Turning to the Trail Blazers, last season’s surprise contenders in the Western Conference finished as the seventh seed even without Damian Lillard for most of the year. Lillard’s season was derailed by a torn Achilles, allowing Deni Avdija and Shaedon Sharpe to elevate their play, with Scoot Henderson also showing growth and Donovan Clingan proving to be among the league’s best rebounding bigs. Portland’s offseason addition of Ja Morant elevates the project to a new level. Morant, who was an MVP candidate in 2022, has shown he can be a dynamic force when healthy and available. At 26, pairing Morant with Lillard could create a dangerous tandem that makes the Blazers serious contenders.
Finally, Detroit is coming off a season where they led the East in the regular year, yet postseason results showed there was still a gap to close. They posted an impressive run, but the eight-seed status and a first-round exit in seven games underscored the need for more consistency and depth. To address these gaps, the Pistons acquired John Collins and Isaiah Joe, two pieces that align with the team’s timeline and can contribute immediately. They also added veteran presence and reliability in Taurean Prince and Gary Harris, which should bolster leadership and depth. If Detroit can retain Jalen Duren, they’ll enter the season with a more well-rounded roster and a stronger grasp on competing at a higher level than last year.
In sum, the 2026-27 landscape features notable shakeups and strategic acquisitions across these franchises. Each team has aimed to balance star power with depth, create flexible lineups, and build toward sustained success. As the season unfolds, the real test will be how these new combinations translate into on-court chemistry, defense, and consistency night after night.
