Marcus Rashford sees his release clause expire

With England’s World Cup campaign finished, Manchester United must turn their attention to solving the Marcus Rashford dilemma. Despite a trophy-laden loan spell with Barcelona, the Catalans chose not to exercise the option to buy the Manchester-born forward. They want another loan, a route INEOS are reluctant to approve. Yet Rashford’s hefty salary remains a major hurdle as the co-owners seek to trim a bloated wage bill. This is a key reason Bayern Munich have stayed away, and why United are wary of selling to a direct rival.
In the midst of this, head coach Michael Carrick has extended an olive branch to the 28-year-old, who is expected to join United’s pre-season training camp after a brief break. While both parties would prefer a clean break, the complexities of the situation mean a return is very much on the cards, and staying at Old Trafford could be a viable option. That could save INEOS a significant amount of money, particularly amid ongoing chatter about Crysencio Summerville.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein has revealed that Rashford’s £40 million release clause has officially expired. From here, any sale will have to be negotiated, even as interest from clubs such as Liverpool and Manchester City remains possible should they wish to pursue him. “Marcus Rashford’s £40 million exit clause has expired, meaning any sale will now need to be negotiated. The 28-year-old, who has been with England at the World Cup, will now, as things stand, return to training. Any approaches for the forward will be considered by all parties, who remain under contract at Old Trafford until 2028. The exit clause was not available to United’s two biggest rivals, Manchester City and Liverpool,” The Athletic reported.
Sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, say Rashford has turned down proposals, some of which were more lucrative than his current deal. Turkish clubs have shown interest, but the England star is not keen on a move to Türkiye at this stage of his career. The best-case scenario for United would be for Rashford to impress in pre-season, potentially triggering interest from multiple suitors. Given that he still has two years left on his contract, INEOS would ideally aim to move him on for his estimated market value of about £34 million, with that sum representing pure profit if a sale materializes.
For United, the objective remains clear: maximize value, explore suitable options, and navigate wage pressures while keeping a highly regarded academy graduate in play. If Rashford can demonstrate form and fitness during pre-season, the club could unlock a range of potential outcomes, from a continued role at Old Trafford to a strategic departure that aligns with both footballing ambitions and financial realities.
