3 unanswered questions before training camp: New York Giants edition

By admin — In News — July 13, 2026

As part of this series, which we’ve titled “3 Unanswered Questions” for NFL teams heading into training camps this summer, we will examine all 32 franchises. For this installment, we stay within the NFC East and focus on what must be answered a couple of weeks into New York Giants camp. Under new head coach John Harbaugh, the team will adopt an old-school mindset, among other changes. Let’s break down the key issues.
The Giants have been hampered by poor drafting, limited talent development, and a carousel of personnel moves. Harbaugh, known for instilling discipline and a clear vision, should inject energy into the franchise and help unlock the potential of their young players. The fan base is starving for a contender, and signs point to progress in the right direction. However, that progress must be evident early in camp, especially given the scrutiny that comes with a demanding media market and the expectations placed on a rising roster.
Jaxson Dart is a talent with gunslinger swagger, but he faces the challenge of recognizing when to pull back and live to fight another down. Longevity in the NFL isn’t guaranteed when quarterbacks take unnecessary risks against capable defenders. His rookie season showed flashes, yet he will need to make smarter decisions, particularly on downfield throws. Gaining greater comfort and consistency under center will be essential as he advances into his second season. A few refinements in his decision-making and mechanics should become evident during the sophomore year.
Harbaugh’s influence is often associated with strong rushing attacks and stout defense. The Giants can certainly establish a ground game, but the more pressing area for improvement is the defense, coordinated this year by Dennard Wilson. The run defense has ranked as low as 27th over the past four seasons, a trend that must change. Wilson will need to design schemes that plug gaps and limit the opponent’s ability to attack through the middle, where the Giants have repeatedly been exposed. Without a more effective interior run defense, even a solid offensive plan may struggle to translate into wins.
In this NFC East re-examination, the Giants’ success hinges on a balanced approach that revamps the trenches, accelerates the development of young signal-caller Dart, and solidifies a more dependable defensive front. The coming weeks will reveal whether Harbaugh’s tenure can catalyze the kind of immediate progress a franchise and its loyal fans crave, or whether the rebuilding process will require more time and patience. This analysis mirrors the broader narrative of the 2024 season, offering a lens into what must be proven once training camp opens and the Fox Sports-style spotlight intensifies.
