‘I’m here to push and compete’ – striker Wilson joins on a free

Callum Wilson has revealed that Brentford boss Keith Richards, not Keith Andrews—who is the Bees’ manager—played a pivotal role in his decision to move to Brentford, a transfer he described as the result of a genuine “ambition” communicated during what he called a productive and positive conversation. The 34-year-old striker has joined the club on a free transfer after leaving relegated West Ham, signing a one-year contract that reflects Brentford’s interest in reinforcing the attack with experienced Premier League talent.
In an interview with Brentford’s media team, Wilson expressed gratitude for the opportunity to join a club he has long respected. He said, “It’s nice, it’s amazing, I’m grateful for the opportunity.” He explained that the decisive moment came when Andrews outlined the club’s ambition and his own desires for what Brentford can achieve. Wilson sensed a potential to contribute and help the team achieve its goals, noting that his assessment of the club was not only about its recent form but also about the environment and the squad.
Wilson also cited his familiarity with Brentford, having watched and faced them on multiple occasions. He said he appreciated the sense of unity and togetherness within the squad, factors that reassured him about making the move. His decision to join was driven by a belief that he could add value to Brentford’s attacking unit while fitting into a style of play that the club has cultivated over recent seasons.
Last season, Wilson scored seven goals and provided one assist across 35 appearances. While his statistical output in terms of starts stood at 12, his influence on matches often extended beyond the numbers, underscoring his capacity to impact games when called upon. He believes there is a complementary dynamic with Brentford’s number nine, Igor Thiago, who enjoyed a prolific 2025-26 campaign with 20 Premier League goals. Wilson recognizes the challenge of stepping into a team following such a standout season but views the move as an opportunity to contribute meaningfully.
“Many players in my position would probably shy away from the pressure associated with joining a club coming off a player’s exceptional form,” Wilson reflected. “For me, it’s about embracing the challenge, sharing the workload in the striking department, and bringing my own qualities to the table. We’re different types of strikers, but I can see potential for us to play together at times.” He emphasized that his aim is to push and compete within a collective framework. “It’s not ‘you and me,’ it’s togetherness, and there are other strikers in the building as well. If we all perform and push each other, we can help the team move forward, and that’s the key.”
Wilson’s career has been defined by his goal-scoring instincts and his experience across multiple top-flight clubs. He has previously played for Bournemouth, Newcastle United, and West Ham United, accumulating a notable tally of 95 Premier League goals. His ability to find the back of the net, his understanding of the game, and his seasoned presence in the locker room are all seen as valuable assets for Brentford as they look to consolidate a competitive position in the Premier League this season.
Brentford manager Keith Andrews, expressing his enthusiasm about the signing, praised Wilson’s goal-scoring acumen and his experience in high-stakes matches. “He brings that nous to score goals and the kind of experience that can help us at training and in games,” Andrews said. “This is another strong addition for us as we continue to build a squad capable of challenging at the top end of the table.”
As Wilson looks ahead to his move to the Bees, he is focused on integrating quickly and contributing from day one. He understands that the club’s philosophy emphasizes collective effort, versatility in the attacking department, and a shared commitment to pushing the team forward. With Wilson’s proven track record and Brentford’s ongoing ambition, both the player and the club appear aligned in their pursuit of continued progress and success in the Premier League.
