The San Francisco 49ers have spent the first six weeks of the season making a difficult game look remarkably simple. They will board the plane for Atlanta this weekend, missing the piece that has made so much of that ease possible, as Kyle Shanahan confirmed Friday that Mike Evans will sit out Sunday’s matchup with the Falcons while his Achilles and ribs get a chance to settle down. Evans had already been playing through broken ribs and a nagging case of Achilles tendinitis when he lined up against Washington on Monday night. 49ers WR Mike Evans (ribs, achilles) will not play against the Falcons on Sunday. pic.twitter.com/6mMLGGR3Eo— NFL (@NFL) October 23, 2026After racing out to 94 yards on just three receptions, he felt the Achilles flare up again before halftime and never returned to the field.Shanahan initially struck an optimistic tone, framing the injury as a recurring nuisance that Evans knows how to handle rather than something that should keep him out for long, yet a full week without a single practice rep told a different story. The timing, at least, works in San Francisco’s favor, because the bye immediately follows the Atlanta trip, meaning Evans can rest for two weeks instead of one and target a return when the Raiders visit on November 8.What the 49ers lose in the meantime is hard to overstate, since Evans has handled the role of the big, physical boundary threat that this offense lacked for several seasons, leading the team’s receivers with 27 catches, 420 yards, and three scores while keeping drives alive with 25 first-down receptions. When Purdy has looked his way, the results have been close to flawless, with the quarterback posting a 130.3 rating on those throws, and that level of trust does not transfer neatly to anyone else on the roster.49ers ruled out Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel for Sunday’s game in Atlanta.— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) October 23, 2026The trouble is that the list of alternatives has been shrinking for months, as Deebo Samuel, Demarcus Robinson, De’Zhaun Stribling and Ricky Pearsall will all be unavailable as well, leaving a position group so thin that Shanahan quipped about turning his third-string quarterback and a reserve offensive tackle into backup pass catchers if things get truly desperate. The silver lining arrives in the form of Christian Kirk, who has been waiting since the first day of training camp, when a calf injury derailed his introduction to the Bay Area, and who logged full practices all week to put himself in line for his long-delayed debut. Kirk’s experience working the middle of the field should give Purdy a dependable chain-mover.
