Roy Keane has claimed that Thomas Tuchel, England’s manager, still does not know his best XI, despite the Three Lions topping their World Cup group with a victory over Panama. England were sluggish in the first half in New Jersey, but Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane struck after the break to seal first place and set up a last-32 clash in Atlanta on Wednesday. Tuchel pivoted his lineup from the Ghana draw, making five changes and handing Reece James’s injury to Jarrell Quansah, who also picked up a knock. Morgan Rogers, Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford returned to the attack, while Kane remained the one constant in a reshaped forward line. “I don’t think he has a clue what his best XI is,” Keane told ITV. “That’s not good. Defensively, he’s chopping and changing. It’s not just the wide players… other positions. The onus is on the attacking positions. There are too many England players not doing enough. Too many question marks where it’s a toss of a coin for selection. These lads don’t do it.”
Bellingham, meanwhile, was more optimistic after netting his second goal of the tournament. “First job achieved,” he said. “We came here to do it in sections. We got through the pre-camp games, and we’ve done the first objective: to top the group. Thomas Tuchel made five changes to the England XI which beat Panama. We knew what level we wanted to achieve, and we did that in the second half.” When asked whether he preferred his goal or his assist for Kane, the Real Madrid midfielder replied: “The assist. It was a good combination of play to set it up for Harry again. Everything you see in him shows the effort he puts in as captain; his quality speaks for itself.” Kane also became England’s all-time World Cup leading scorer with 11 goals, surpassing Gary Lineker. England now head to a last-32 date with Senegal, DR Congo, Algeria or Austria on Wednesday at 5pm BST.
