Kristaps Porzingis reportedly reaches 2-year, $40 million extension to return to Warriors

Kristaps Porzingis is staying with the Golden State Warriors after all, signing a two-year, $40 million extension on Monday night that prevents him from hitting free agency this offseason and keeps him in San Francisco through the 2027-28 campaign. Porzingis joined the Warriors in the trade that sent Jonathan Kuminga to the Atlanta Hawks, a deal that marked his arrival in Golden State. Kuminga, who had a rocky tenure with the Warriors, is now a free agent after the Hawks declined to pick up his option ahead of Monday’s deadline.
In 15 games with Golden State last season, Porzingis averaged 16.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game in what was his 10th NBA season. He previously signed a two-year, $60 million contract with the Boston Celtics that expired after last season, making him an unrestricted free agent this summer. The former No. 4 overall pick by the New York Knicks in 2015 has bounced between teams in recent years. After helping the Celtics win a title in 2024, Porzingis was part of a three-team deal that sent him to Atlanta, which eventually led to his acquisition by the Warriors—marking the sixth team of his decade-long career and his third in just the past two seasons.
Despite a limited impact last season, Porzingis is expected to be a key contributor for the Warriors this fall. The franchise missed the playoffs last season, finishing 37-45, and now faces several offseason questions, including Draymond Green’s opt-out and ongoing speculation about possible moves involving Anthony Davis or LeBron James. While the full slate of offseason moves remains uncertain, Porzingis’ new contract is settled, giving the Warriors one major item checked off their to-do list as they look to retool and pursue high-profile targets.
