Lead Stories debunked the claim that FIFA President Gianni Infantino attended two World Cup games that were played simultaneously in different cities. The report states that the photos were edited to create the illusion of Infantino’s presence at two matches happening at the same time, when in reality the events occurred on separate days. The story began with a June 25, 2026 post by the @TRNDRfootball account on X, which claimed Infantino was pictured at both Group E games despite their simultaneous start times. The images allegedly showed him in each stadium just 10 minutes apart, though the stadiums were hours apart. In reality, the top image showed Infantino at the Iran–New Zealand match on June 15, 2026, not Ecuador vs. Germany, with the original screenshot taken around 10:50 in that game. The bottom image depicted the Côte d’Ivoire–Curaçao game, as identified by the BBC, with Infantino appearing in Fox Sports’ replay of the June 25 match. Lead Stories also examined a similar post by @_abochie on June 25, 2026, which claimed Infantino attended both Sweden and the Netherlands games, though the two venues were roughly 500 miles apart. Lead Stories used Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, to analyze the images: the top image contained edited or AI-generated elements, even though it depicted Infantino and a real match (Japan vs. Sweden). The second image likewise showed signs of AI-assisted modification based on digital watermark analysis. The outlet noted that it reviewed the video for better SEO as part of its fact-check.
