‘My commitment to English cricket has never wavered’: Brendon McCullum on England future after home Test loss to New Zealand

Brendon McCullum has insisted his commitment to English cricket remains strong, despite questions about his position as Test coach following Ben Stokes’s sudden retirement and England’s 2-1 home series defeat to New Zealand. Under an ECB contract running through 2027 that covers both red-ball and white-ball duties, McCullum emphasized that he believes in the direction England can take and the identity the team already possesses. He highlighted the 115-run win in the series opener at Lord’s as evidence that England can develop into a well-rounded side, not merely a talented one, and he acknowledged that the subsequent losses at The Oval and Trent Bridge were tough. McCullum stressed that the team’s identity remains intact and that they should continue refining it to become the team they want to represent for the people of England, reaffirming his unwavering enthusiasm for English cricket.
With the five-match T20I series against India looming in Durham just days after the Test conclusion, McCullum noted the quick shift in focus to white-ball cricket and described the squad as having a clear direction he intends to keep developing. He praised the talent within English cricket and reiterated his belief that the squad can sustain and build on the progress shown, even as they face a challenging transition period.
