Manchester United are set to miss out on Mateus Fernandes, with Tottenham Hotspur appearing to win the race to sign the West Ham United midfielder after meeting the club’s asking price of about £85 million in guaranteed terms, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic. Ornstein reports that Spurs submitted the highest bid and that the 21-year-old Fernandes has chosen to join Tottenham, despite United having been linked with him since the end of the 2025-26 season. West Ham, relegated and needing funds, reportedly demanded the hefty fee, which proved too rich for United’s negotiators. As a result, United will have to look elsewhere to recruit a midfielder this summer. The club hierarchy is said to want two midfield options this window, after signing Ederson from Atalanta, but with the transfer window opening soon and pre-season starting on July 9, time is running short.
