Harry Kane was named Player of the Match as England edged Congo DR 2-1 in the World Cup Round of 32. The Three Lions trailed for 75 minutes before Kane rose to head in the equaliser, and in the 86th minute he fired a superb strike into the top-right corner to complete his brace. Kane now has 13 World Cup finals goals, moving ahead of Pelé and level with Just Fontaine, who hit all his goals in a single tournament in 1958. He sits behind Lionel Messi (19), Kylian Mbappé (18), Miroslav Klose (16), Ronaldo (15), and Gerd Müller (14) on the all-time list.
“Honestly, it feels amazing. What a crazy game against a tough, well-organised side,” Kane said after the match. “After that first hydration break, we raised our level and started to look really dangerous, even though their goalkeeper pulled off some unbelievable saves. For us, it was all about grinding it out and waiting for those hero moments, and today it happened to be my turn. When you reach the knockouts, the pressure and risk are higher, but from an attacking standpoint, that was easily our best performance of the tournament. Sometimes you just have to grind out wins, and we did exactly that today. I told the boys to enjoy it—we’re through, and we go again in four days. Over 90 minutes, we’re a really tough team to handle, and we hope to keep this momentum going,” the 32-year-old added.
