Blades Brown, 19, is set to chase victory at the John Deere Classic this week, echoing a path taken by Jordan Spieth when he was the same age in 2013. Spieth has since built a superstar career with 13 PGA Tour wins, including three majors. But in recent years, the 32-year-old has struggled to find his best form and hasn’t claimed a title since April 2022. If Brown were offered Spieth’s career up to age 32, he would probably accept.
Spieth has been trying a range of methods to regain his slump, but nothing has clicked yet. The Dallas native may be grappling with paralysis by analysis. Brown, by contrast, is just beginning his PGA Tour journey and trails into Silvis with strong confidence.
Brown observed Spieth on the range before the John Deere Classic and was impressed by what he saw. In 2013, Spieth holed out from off the green to force a playoff with Zach Johnson and David Hearn at TPC Deere Run. When asked by Golf Channel if he believes he can duplicate Spieth’s John Deere win at 19, Brown replied, “I got to hit balls next to Jordan Spieth this morning, and he was striping it. It was really cool.” He also noted the historic shot Spieth made on 18 to spark the playoff and said, “That’s a hard shot.” Brown added that he’s genuinely excited for the week ahead.
Brown’s potential to contend at the John Deere Classic in Silvis is evident. He demonstrated his capability earlier in the season by matching Scottie Scheffler for three rounds at the American Express before a final-day 74. The teenager has already proved PGA Tour readiness, making 10 cuts in 16 events and accumulating four top-25s, including two top-10s and a third-place finish.
For Brown, the challenge will be managing expectations while retaining quiet confidence in his skills. Not every young player bursts onto the PGA Tour with the same consistency as Spieth did, but Brown possesses both the talent and the mindset to pursue a similar level of achievement. The coming years will reveal how he progresses and whether he can translate his potential into sustained development on the tour.
