Paul Merson worries about Rice playing at right back against Mexico

Paul Merson has expressed concerns about Declan Rice possibly lining up at right-back for England against Mexico in the World Cup last-16 clash. England had secured a victory over the DR Congo in the round of 32, though the match exposed the right-back position on several occasions in the first half. Djed Spence started there, yet, being a natural left-back, he struggled to handle the pace and direct runs of the opposition, leading to defensive instability before changes were made.
Rice found himself in the right-back role in the second half, bringing greater control and balance to England’s defence. His positioning and composure helped relieve pressure on that flank and provided a steadier platform for the team. This brief stint has sparked talk that he could again be used there against Mexico, especially given the ongoing doubts over England’s defensive options for the fixture.
Reece James and Jarrell Quansah remain doubts for selection, and if neither is available, Thomas Tuchel might again consider Rice in that role, though it is not seen as a long-term solution.
Merson’s concerns were highlighted in the Metro, where he said: “You know what, for the 15 minutes or so that he had at right-back he was outstanding. You had that little triangle with him, Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka down the right-hand side a couple of times. My problem is that when you’ve got a game like Mexico where they’re isolated and it will be one-vs-one… he’ll do a job, of course he will, he’s Declan Rice, a brilliant professional and a brilliant player but I don’t know.”
