Saying that former Ohio State goaltender Jakub Dobes was a revelation for the Montreal Canadiens would be an understatement. He simply heated up at the right moment and helped propel the team that drafted him out of college to the Eastern Conference Finals last season. Statistically, Dobes was the NHL’s top rookie goalie in 2025-26, posting a 2.78 goals-against average and a .901 save percentage while going 29-13-1 in 42 regular-season appearances. But it was his postseason performance that truly stood out, delivering incredible saves and standing tall in the crease during seven-game battles against the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Buffalo Sabres.
His emergence came as a surprise to many, especially since Montreal pivoted to Dobes midway through the year and he seized the opportunity with both hands. It now appears the club is committed to Dobes as their goalie of the present and future, rather than sticking with what many expected would be Samuel Montembeault as the No. 1. The contract is reported to carry an average annual value of $5,357,575.
Les Canadiens s’entendent sur les termes d’une prolongation de contrat de trois saisons (2027-2028 à 2029-2030) avec le gardien Jakub Dobes. The deal may not tie him to the league’s highest earners, but it represents a commitment that should let him continue to prove himself and potentially command an even larger salary down the line.
