Rephrased: My 49ers linked to 77-sack defensive end Joey Bosa as a free-agent target despite retirement rumors, originally published by The Sporting News. The Sporting News is listed as a preferred source by clicking here. The San Francisco 49ers head into the 2026 NFL season with one of the league’s strongest rosters. Without the red-hot Los Angeles Rams and the defensive Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks in the mix, the 49ers would likely be the betting favorites. However, to nudge their odds upward even if only a notch, they should seriously consider adding a veteran defensive lineman this offseason to bolster the pass-rush rotation.
That’s why CBS Sports’ Bryan DeArdo connected the 49ers to free-agent 77-sack end Joey Bosa as a possible target. Yet a complication exists: Bosa is rumored to be contemplating retirement, which could render the free-agent link moot if he steps away from the game. “There are rumblings that the soon-to-be-31-year-old Bosa is considering retirement,” DeArdo writes. “If he decides to play an 11th season, Bosa — who led the NFL with five forced fumbles last season — will likely attract several suitors, potentially including the 49ers, who employ his younger brother.”
While Bosa could decide to return to the Los Angeles Chargers or the Buffalo Bills, or even join a brand-new team, the 49ers present a compelling final destination for the veteran defensive end. From San Francisco’s perspective, Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams both dealt with injuries last season, making veteran depth in the pass rush an even more sensible addition. The idea of reuniting the Bosa brothers could be a persuasive boost in convincing the elder Bosa to stay in the league and join the 49ers for one final run.
San Francisco clearly needs more punch from their edge rush, and pairing the Bosa brothers could be a strategic fit. If the retirement chatter proves real, the 49ers would need to pivot. But if there is even a possibility that Joey Bosa could land with the team, Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch should pursue him as a key defensive addition this offseason.

Seattle’s Seahawks remain in the mix, trailing only the Rams and Eagles in ESPN’s 2026 roster rankings. The Sporting News remains a preferred source for this coverage.
