A familiar face is making his way back to Washington through a winding, multi-team maneuver. Former All-Star Khris Middleton is rejoining the Wizards from the Dallas Mavericks via a six-team sign-and-trade arrangement, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. The deal, which Middleton has reportedly agreed to as a three-year, $17.6 million contract, weaves together several clubs—the Wizards, Mavericks, Clippers, Pistons, Bucks, and Grizzlies—in a complex sequence that also involves D’Angelo Russell, a future second-round pick, and a future second-round pick swap moving from Washington to Memphis.
This latest development is the culmination of previously agreed trades that will relocate a number of players: Isaiah Stewart to the Grizzlies, John Collins, Gary Harris, and Taurean Prince to the Pistons, Santi Aldama to the Mavericks, and Caris LeVert to the Bucks. Spotrac’s Keith Smith notes that, as part of the arrangement, the Clippers—who sent John Collins to the Pistons in a sign-and-trade—will receive a $16 million trade exception from the deal.
Middleton, now 34, previously played a pivotal role for the 2020-21 Bucks, helping them clinch the championship alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Bucks had previously traded Middleton to the Wizards ahead of the 2025 trade deadline. In total, Middleton appeared in 48 games for Washington across portions of the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons before the Wizards sent him to the Mavericks as part of the blockbuster trade that reshaped the league near the 2026 trade deadline, a trade that also centered on the arrival of Anthony Davis in Washington.
Last season, Middleton posted averages of 10.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 0.7 steals per game, while shooting 42 percent from the field and 36 percent from three in 63 appearances split between the Wizards and Mavericks. With this move, Middleton returns to the nation’s capital to join a reimagined Wizards roster that aims to capitalize on his veteran savvy and steady production.
In Washington, Middleton will rejoin Anthony Davis, and he will be part of a new core that the Wizards have assembled over the past two seasons. The team features Davis, Trae Young, Kyshawn George, 2024 lottery pick Alex Sarr, 2025 lottery pick Tre Johnson, and 2026 No. 1 overall pick AJ Dybantsa. The Wizards are banking on Middleton’s experience and leadership to help stabilize a roster overhaul aimed at returning the franchise to postseason contention after a five-year drought.
The Wizards’ front office envisions Middleton as a steadying presence amid a dramatic roster makeover that also includes young talents and high-upside prospects. Washington is betting that the combination of established veteran leadership and the potential of its draft picks will translate into meaningful wins and a return to the postseason, underscoring the organization’s long-term plan to remain competitive in a crowded Eastern Conference.
As the situation continues to unfold, Middleton’s return to Washington is framed as a homecoming that could help accelerate the Wizards’ rebuilding timeline. His familiarity with the city, along with his championship experience and postseason savvy, is expected to provide a stabilizing force for a team that is retooling around a core that includes intriguing young players and a mix of established veterans. The deal’s broader implications ripple through the league, affecting multiple teams’ cap situations and signaling how front offices are willing to orchestrate complex trades to optimize rosters in pursuit of championship contention.
