Harte and Kelly step down as Offaly joint-managers

Offaly senior football joint-managers Declan Kelly and Mickey Harte have resigned after the county’s exit from the Tailteann Cup. The defeat came at the hands of Wicklow in the Tailteann Cup semi-finals on 20 June, signaling the end of the current management era. In a statement released on Wednesday, the Offaly county board explained that Harte chose to step aside after Kelly’s decision to step down, noting that it felt appropriate for Harte to move on in light of the circumstances.
Mickey Harte, a three-time All-Ireland winner, has a long managerial history that includes spells with Louth and Derry following his departure from Tyrone. He joined Offaly in 2024 as a joint manager alongside Declan Kelly, who had been in charge since 2023. The partnership enjoyed some success, including leading Offaly to promotion to Division Two for the 2025 season. However, the team faced a setback this year with relegation back to the third tier, reflecting a challenging period for Offaly football.
This season’s campaign saw Offaly exit the Leinster Senior Football Championship at the first-round stage, before advancing to the tail end of the Tailteann Cup. Their progress ended in a heavy defeat to Wicklow, with a final score of 2-26 to 4-15, effectively sealing their fate in the competition and prompting leadership changes within the management structure.
The Offaly GAA statement read: “Offaly GAA has been informed by joint senior football managers Declan Kelly and Mickey Harte of their decision to step down from their roles.” It went on to express gratitude to the outgoing managers for their dedication, commitment, and professionalism during their tenure with the Offaly senior football team. The board also extended thanks to head coach Luke Bree and the entire management and backroom team for their efforts.
The organization conveyed best wishes to Declan, Mickey, Luke, and the rest of the management and backroom staff for success and happiness in their future endeavors. While the exact timing of Kelly’s departure was previously announced, Harte’s decision to leave underlines a broader transition within Offaly’s football leadership as the county looks to rebuild and regroup following a year of mixed results and the setback in the Tailteann Cup.
Looking ahead, Offaly will be required to initiate a new round of recruitment and selection for a senior football management team as they prepare for upcoming campaigns. The club’s supporters and analysts will be watching closely to see who steps into these influential roles, how the county addresses on-field performance, and what strategic changes will be implemented to improve competitiveness in both the National League and Leinster Championship in the seasons to come. With a strong desire to stabilise the football set-up, Offaly faces the task of identifying leadership capable of returning the team to winning form and delivering sustained progress in a highly competitive environment.
