Insider: Patrick Kane Detroit Return Looking Less Likely

By admin — In News — July 8, 2026

Patrick Kane remains one of the few prominent unrestricted free agents in what has been a sparse 2026 UFA class. He could choose to return to the Detroit Red Wings, the team he has called home for the last three seasons, or he could seek a new challenge elsewhere next year. This offseason marks the first time since Kane joined Detroit that his future with the team isn’t a foregone conclusion. In previous summers, Kane would typically secure an extension with the Red Wings before free agency opened on July 1, but this year he is testing the open market for the first time during his tenure with Detroit. While Kane has not closed the door on a possible return, the prevailing sense is that he may end up playing for a different club in the 2026-2027 season. If Kane were fully committed to Detroit, a contract would likely already be signed. The fact that he and his representatives are weighing options and evaluating other potential opportunities suggests he is open to a shift in direction. He will turn 38 in November of next year, and the legendary forward has only so much time left in a Hall of Fame-caliber career.
Insider Elliotte Friedman has not declared Kane’s return to Detroit a certainty. Speaking on the 32 Thoughts podcast, Friedman noted, “He’s got options; I don’t know that I expect him to go back to Detroit.” When a final Stanley Cup run is on the table, leaving Detroit may be Kane’s best route. The Red Wings have struggled to reach the playoffs during his tenure there, and questions about the club’s long-term direction have lingered amid the ongoing Dylan Larkin situation.
If Kane chooses not to return to Detroit, several compelling destinations have been floated as plausible fits. The Buffalo Sabres, his hometown team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, and his former Chicago Blackhawks squad have all been linked to him. Each of these options would come with its own intriguing storyline if Kane signs with them.
For Buffalo, Kane would have the chance to finish his career with the organization he cheered for while growing up in the region, mirroring a path similar to what his former teammate Jonathan Toews took with the Winnipeg Jets this season. For Toronto, signing with the Maple Leafs would add another Original Six franchise to Kane’s resume, and it would give him the opportunity to play alongside fellow first overall picks Auston Matthews and Gavin McKenna. The Blackhawks storyline would be the most poignant: Kane could close his NHL journey where it all began in 2007, potentially teaming with Connor Bedard in a bid to restore playoff hockey to Chicago.
As Kane weighs his options, the NHL landscape will be watching to see where he lands this offseason, potentially marking what could be his final chapter in the league. It will be fascinating to observe how the next move shapes the remainder of Kane’s storied career.
