Justin Verlander announces retirement, will be forced to spend time with supermodel wife

There is nothing left for Justin Verlander to prove in Major League Baseball. At 43, the time has come for him to step away from the game. Verlander announced on Wednesday that he will close out a Hall of Fame-caliber career after 22 seasons in the big leagues. Across those years, he captured an AL MVP award, three Cy Youngs (along with three runner-up finishes), Rookie of the Year honors, two World Series championships, and a pitching triple crown.
In 2026, he returned to the Detroit Tigers—the organization where he debuted and spent the first 12-and-a-half seasons—yet his form on the mound faltered. His only start of the year lasted just 3.2 innings, yielding five earned runs, before he was placed on the 60-day injured list with a hip injury.
Although he has not been performing at an All-Star level recently, Verlander’s résumé earned him the American League’s Legacy Pick at next week’s All-Star Game in Philadelphia. On Wednesday, he signaled that this honor could serve as the culmination of a storied career.
Verlander will retire at season’s end, stepping away from the field now and eventually being welcomed into Cooperstown five years hence. He’ll have the opportunity to spend summers with his wife, Kate Upton, or perhaps follow the path tread by Alex Rodriguez or David Ortiz into the broadcast booth next spring. Regardless of the choice, he is entering a new chapter, and the baseball world is left to reflect on one of the most dominant pitchers of the last two decades.
