Connor Bedard injury update: Blackhawks star gets rough recovery timeline

By admin — In News — July 8, 2026

Connor Bedard’s fourth NHL season has been delayed beyond the usual start date after an offseason training accident necessitated surgery. Early in the morning, the Chicago Blackhawks confirmed that Bedard underwent successful repair surgery on his left shoulder, and the team estimated that his rehabilitation would take roughly four months. If the timeline holds, the star forward should be back on the ice with Chicago somewhere in the early to mid-November window, a recovery period that keeps him away from the rink for a portion of the preseason and early regular season action.
This setback marks another tough break for Bedard, who previously dealt with a right shoulder issue in December 2025 that caused him to miss about four weeks of the season. The No. 1 overall pick from the 2023 NHL Draft has managed just one fully healthy season since entering the league, a 2024-25 campaign in which he played through a fractured jaw during his rookie year before returning to contribute, and then dealing with last season’s shoulder problems. Despite the injuries, Bedard delivered career-best numbers in goals (30) and points (75) for the Blackhawks, helping the organization build around him as they try to rise back toward respectability in a challenging period for the franchise.
Even with a midseason return still on the table, the current news cycle surrounding Bedard is far from the optimism the Blackhawks and their budding star would have preferred. The latest incident occurred on July 2 during a Blackhawks offseason practice when Bedard slipped and collided with the boards on his left shoulder after tripping on the ice. He exited the session immediately, clutching his left shoulder in clear distress, signaling the severity of the impact and the seriousness of the evaluation to follow.
At the moment, Bedard remains an RFA under contract negotiations with the Blackhawks as he seeks an extension with the team. There was speculation in the league this summer about the possibility of an offer sheet from another franchise, a topic that tends to surface in July as teams gauge the market for elite young players. However, given the timing and nature of his latest injury, it is highly unlikely that any rival clubs will pursue an offer sheet or attempt to pry Bedard away from Chicago, at least in the near term, as the financial and strategic risks would be substantial for any potential suitor.
This update on Bedard’s health and status provides a clearer picture of the road ahead. The four-month rough recovery forecast places his return around November, which will give him a chance to rejoin a Blackhawks team that has continued to look for ways to support and maximize his potential. The organization will undoubtedly monitor his progress closely, coordinating with medical staff and training personnel to ensure a safe and thorough return to top-level competition. In the meantime, Bedard’s absence will be felt on the ice as Chicago navigates the early portion of the season without one of its most dynamic young talents, while he focuses on regaining strength, conditioning, and the sharpness that defined his breakout performances.
