Why a Klay Thompson Buyout Makes Sense for Mavs

By admin — In News — July 8, 2026

Klay Thompson joined the Dallas Mavericks in the summer of 2024 with the expectation of forming one half of a formidable trio, following a tough NBA Finals loss. The plan seemed straightforward: Luka Dončić would create, Kyrie Irving would score, and Thompson would spacethe floor, punishing defenses with his elite shooting from beyond the arc. It was a sensible vision that endured for roughly six months before reality intervened. In February 2025, Dončić was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, and Irving suffered a torn ACL the next month. The 2025-26 season saw Thompson anchoring a veteran presence on a 26-56 Mavericks squad built around 18-year-old Cooper Flagg.
During that season, Thompson appeared in 69 games, started eight, and logged 21.7 minutes per game. He averaged 11.7 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per contest. His three-point percentage, 38.3%, marked the lowest shooting efficiency of his career, a decline not attributable to any personal fault but rather to a roster that bore little resemblance to the one he had signed up to join. As Thompson approached his 37th birthday in February, his $17.5 million player option for the 2026-27 season carried real financial weight for a Mavericks team aiming to stay below the luxury tax while continuing to build around Cooper Flagg. Since helping the Golden State Warriors win the 2022 NBA Championship—after returning from a torn ACL and a torn Achilles suffered in consecutive seasons, one of the sport’s most remarkable comebacks—Thompson’s production and defensive impact have waned, and his role has gradually diminished.
The prospect of a trade remained viable but constrained; Thompson is an expiring contract with championship experience and a reputation as a premier shooter. Contending teams would surely show interest, but the question would be what they were willing to surrender for a 37-year-old wing whose on-court production no longer matched his stellar reputation. A buyout began to look like the cleaner solution, allowing Dallas to gain financial flexibility while Thompson could choose his next destination and pursue a role with a contender suited to his abilities. In the end, neither party had envisioned the outcome after Thompson’s arrival in Dallas, and a buyout could represent the most favorable path for all involved.
The evolving situation extended beyond Thompson’s situation alone. In a six-team trade that included Khris Middleton rejoining the Wizards in a sign-and-trade, the Mavericks found themselves among the teams shaping a broader move set as new pieces shifted in and out of place. This sequence underscored how the expectations set in Dallas during Thompson’s signing diverged dramatically from what actually unfolded, highlighting the challenge of aligning a veteran star’s fit with a rapidly changing roster and a franchise navigating financial constraints and championship ambitions. As the path forward remains uncertain, a buyout emerges as a plausible resolution that could unlock flexibility for Dallas and provide Thompson with an opportunity to join a contender perfectly matched to his experience and skill set.
