Mavericks Add Young Guard From Detroit Pistons in 6-Team Trade

By admin — In News — July 8, 2026

The Dallas Mavericks are shoring up their backcourt with a major six-team trade that lands guard Marcus Sasser from the Detroit Pistons. Rumors dating back to June 30 had suggested Dallas was among the leading suitors for Sasser, and those reports have now become reality as the 25-year-old guard heads to Dallas. In the same deal, the Mavericks will also acquire forward Santi Aldama from the Memphis Grizzlies, adding more depth to a roster that is aiming to contend this season.
The trade is sprawling, with a number of moving parts and 11 players switching teams in total. Analyst Keith Smith outlined the breadth of the assets involved, highlighting just how intricate the swap is. For Dallas, the return comes with relatively low risk given the cost and potential upside, especially as they look to surround rising youngster Cooper Flagg with capable playmakers. Sasser is set to earn about $5.2 million next season and will become a restricted free agent next summer, giving him a clear runway to prove himself in a larger role. If he breaks out, his next contract could be substantial.
Sasser joins Dallas after three seasons with Detroit, who drafted him 25th overall in 2023. He posted a solid rookie year, averaging 8.3 points and 3.3 assists per game, but his production has trended downward in the subsequent two seasons. His playing time diminished, and he missed the first month of the latest season due to a hip impingement, limiting him to 38 appearances. That interruption, along with a smaller frame, has made him a target on defense at 6-foot-1. Nevertheless, his shooting and scoring impact persists, particularly as a reliable spot-up option. He posted an efficient 1.24 points per possession on catch-and-shoot opportunities, a figure that sits in the 90th percentile league-wide for players with at least 50 possessions. That skill set would be a meaningful lift to Dallas, which ranked near the bottom of the league in 3-point shooting.
Sasser’s career three-point percentage sits at 38.6 percent, indicating he can space the floor for Dallas and complement their perimeter threats. He averaged just 2.8 three-point attempts per game last season, but with the right offensive system and better shot selection, those attempts could rise as he earns a steadier opportunity in a more favorable environment in Dallas.
Beyond the shooting, Sasser has the potential to grow with the tutelage of a future Hall of Fame guard. In Kyrie Irving, he’ll be paired with a creator who has learned how to impose his will against bigger opponents while maintaining efficiency. Irving’s mentorship has already shown benefits for younger Mavericks guards, including Jaden Hardy and Brandon Williams, who benefited from Irving’s guidance and leadership on the court. Sasser could seize a similar development arc, absorbing Irving’s approach to attacking defenses and decision-making, while continuing to develop his own game with Flagg. The pairing of Sasser’s shooting with Irving’s playmaking could yield a dynamic backcourt duo in Dallas.
Pairing Sasser with Aldama adds more flexibility for Dallas. Aldama offers a combination of size and shooting that can help Space the floor and give the Mavericks another versatile wing-forward option. Aldama’s size, combined with his ability to stretch the floor, could create lineups that pose matchup problems for opponents and provide Dallas with more options in the rotation. The presence of Flagg as a rookie who has shown promise as a selfless playmaker should allow Sasser and Aldama to find good looks and contribute to a well-rounded offense.
Overall, the Mavericks’ trade pathway signals a clear intent to surround Flagg with competent, flexible pieces who can contribute immediately and develop alongside him. By landing Sasser, Dallas adds a guard with defensive potential and a reliable outside stroke, while Aldama provides another dimensional threat who can help space the floor and create driving lanes for the likes of Irving and Flagg. If Sasser can show consistency and continue his development, Dallas could reap the rewards of a low-risk, high-upside acquisition that strengthens their backcourt depth and adds a valuable piece to a young, ascending core.
