NEW YORK — A day after a high-scoring slugfest, Citi Field enjoyed a far quieter and more favorable evening for the home team on Wednesday. Christian Scott delivered a strong performance and Brett Baty came through with clutch hitting, helping the Mets to a 6-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals.
The game swung decisively after Jared Young was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in a 1-1 tie. Baty answered with a two-out, two-RBI single into right-center, providing a solid cushion for Xzavion Curry to close out the final three outs in the ninth. Earlier, Jose Cuas’ wild pitch in the eighth allowed Young to score, and Francisco Alvarez followed with an RBI single that plated Baty, extending the lead to 6-1. Curry then yielded an RBI double to Carter Jensen in the ninth for the final tally.
Scott’s outing was exactly the kind of bounce-back performance the Mets needed after a rough day for the pitching staff. The right-hander worked five innings of shutout ball, giving up just three hits and one walk while fanning five. His effort lowered his season ERA to 3.17 across 12 starts. Tobias Myers followed with two innings in relief, permitting one run, and Brooks Raley worked a clean eighth inning. Although Curry allowed a run in the ninth while protecting a five-run lead, the overall performance from the Mets’ pitching staff was stout at every level.
Looking ahead, the Mets aim to clinch the series on Thursday afternoon, which would mark their first series win since June 14 against the Atlanta Braves. Michael Wacha will start for the Royals, with Sean Manaea slated to begin for the Mets. This sets up a critical matchup as New York seeks to carry their momentum into the series finale and continue their push for a more favorable stretch run.
