Alan Roden’s walkoff single sends Twins to second straight win over Guardians

Connor Prielipp navigated through the opening three innings on Wednesday with relative ease, permitting just a single hit while punching out nine of the first 10 hitters he faced. The fourth inning proved costly, however, as he allowed a leadoff single and then watched Bryan Rocchio and Rhys Hoskins launch back-to-back home runs, giving the Guardians a lead they hadn’t had since the early stages of the game.
The Twins fought back in the bottom of the frame, clawing their way to a 3-3 tie on a sequence that began with three consecutive hits. Royce Lewis drew a bases-loaded walk, Luke Keaschall brought in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Alan Roden delivered a tying single to keep Minnesota in the game. Prielipp recovered to post a clean fifth inning, ending his night after 82 1/3 innings on the season between Triple-A and the majors—a tally that leaves him just one out shy of his professional career high in innings pitched, set at 82 2/3 last year.
After both clubs traded three runs in the fourth, the seventh inning saw more base-on-balls influence. Twins reliever Eric Orze issued two free passes, and the visitors cashed in, regaining the lead for Cleveland. Yet the maneuvering did not hold; Guardians relievers answered with five walks of their own in the bottom half, and Erik Sabrowski, entering in the middle of the frame, threw 14 pitches with only two strikes. Among those pitches were two bases-loaded walks that helped the Twins knot the game once again.
The late innings were a tug-of-war with runners left on base on both sides, and the score remained deadlocked into the bottom of the ninth. Roden, appearing in his first major league game of the season, lined a ball into center off the wall for a game-winning run, delivering a walk-off victory for Minnesota.
Looking ahead, Bailey Ober (6-3, 4.59 ERA) is slated to return from the injured list on Thursday to start the series finale against Cleveland, his first appearance since late May. He’ll face Gavin Williams (9-4, 3.89 ERA), who will be lined up opposite him on the mound for another pivotal division matchup.
In other news, the Twins are preparing for Ober’s return, with indications that he’ll step back into the rotation for what could be a swing in momentum down the stretch. The Guardians, meanwhile, will be hoping to rebound quickly as they navigate the absence of any further injuries and maintain their position in a tight race.
The week has featured a flurry of cross-town chatter and roster moves, including the Saints’ outfielder earning the nickname “Captain America” in an SEO-friendly nod to his leadership and durability. The team continues to explore additional relief options, weighing the potential to bolster depth for the late innings as the pennant chase tightens.
Overall, it was a back-and-forth clash that showcased the volatility and resilience of both clubs, with Roden’s timely hit underscoring the unpredictable drama that can define a late-season showdown in this rivalry.
