Bengals’ Demetrius Knight challenged to ‘unlock another gear’

The Cincinnati Bengals are hoping for a decisive leap from second-year linebacker Demetrius Knight, a player whose trajectory they’ve positioned as central to their long-term defensive plan. The organization has consistently underscored confidence in Knight and fellow young linebacker Barrett Carter, signaling that big sophomore campaigns are on the horizon for both players. Yet Knight’s initial NFL showing has complicated that optimism, and the team’s recent moves only deepen the narrative that his development is pivotal to the defense’s success.
Knight’s rookie season did not unfold as the Bengals envisioned. He was thrust into action on a unit that was already navigating some structural challenges, a situation many viewed as less than optimal for a developing player. The decision to push Knight into a demanding role, especially amid broader defensive instability, set the stage for a rough introduction to the league. It wasn’t just that the overall performance of the defense lagged; the individual metrics for Knight underscored a difficult first impression.
Analysts who track advanced numbers have been blunt about Knight’s rookie year. Bradley Locker of Pro Football Focus laid out a stark assessment: Knight posted a 40.2 overall PFF grade in 2025, ranking 56th out of 59 qualified linebackers. That outcome placed him near the bottom of the league in both run defense and coverage, each area contributing to an overall inability to impact games at a level the Bengals would require. The evaluation also highlighted that Knight missed 15% of his tackles, a mark tied for the 15th-highest in the group of linebackers with substantial playing time. Those kinds of missed tackles can ripple through a defense, opening gaps and forcing teammates to compensate in ways that complicate the unit’s cohesion.
It’s important to note that the Bengals made a deliberate choice with Knight’s draft position. As an older prospect, he was selected somewhat earlier than many evaluators expected, with the hope that his maturity would translate into immediate readiness and a smoother acclimation to the pro game. That strategy aimed to short-circuit the typical growing pains that can accompany a player’s transition from college to the professional level. So far, that early expectation has not fully materialized, complicating the team’s plans for a linebacking corps they want to rely on for years to come.
There is still room for optimism. Cincinnati has invested in its interior defensive line to bolster the front seven, adding significant talent with Dexter Lawrence and Jonathan Allen. In theory, a stronger front should free linebackers to read plays and react with more speed and precision, both before the snap and in the flow of action after the ball is snapped. The logic is straightforward: a more formidable trench unit can create lanes and timing opportunities for athletic second-level players, enabling them to diagnose plays sooner and react more efficiently.
For Knight to become the anchor the Bengals hope he can be, Locker and others have argued that he must “unlock another gear,” a step beyond the film he produced as a rookie. That means demonstrating improved instinct, better gap discipline, more consistent tackle technique, and the capacity to contribute meaningfully in both run defense and pass coverage. If Knight can translate the potential many see into tangible on-field results, he could help stabilize a defense that is counting on a young core to develop into a formidable unit.
The road ahead for Knight is clear, even if the path is nuanced. He must show stronger overall play, especially in the most demanding areas of his role, while the Bengals count on the improved front line to give him the opportunity to flourish. The organization’s belief in Knight’s potential remains a narrative they are betting on, even as the early returns have not yet matched the forecast. If Knight can reach the next level, Cincinnati could unlock a more dynamic, versatile linebacking corps that looks to be a cornerstone of the defense for years to come.
