Liverpool need to prioritise homegrown players this summer. While it shouldn’t be the sole guide for deciding who to sign or offload—especially with Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones, and Joe Gomez potentially leaving—there will be several homegrown spots available in the Reds’ squad. If Liverpool continue to bring in foreign talent, they could encounter the same issues they faced last season, such as Federico Chiesa initially being left out of their Champions League squad. This is far from ideal, particularly given the small size of their current squad, so adding homegrown players should be a primary focus.
The high-profile £116 million signing by Manchester City of Elliott Anderson demonstrates how hard it is to land a truly top-tier, homegrown talent. That could change if Richard Hughes rekindles Liverpool’s interest in the player. When Wolves were relegated, several clubs were linked with a move for Mateus Mane. The 18-year-old enjoyed a breakout campaign at Molineux, spending around 90% of his minutes as a regular starter. He appeared in 30 matches across all competitions, contributing to five goals. Mane has experience across the attack, featuring on the left wing, as a striker, and as a number 10. While this would not directly resolve Liverpool’s immediate need for a right-winger, pairing Mane with Rio Ngoumou could give them two of the Premier League’s brightest young attackers.
Though speculation about Mane’s future has cooled recently, Liverpool could re-enter the race. If they did, they might not only acquire a highly talented player but also secure Mane for a reasonable fee. Beyond talent, Mane would help Liverpool establish longer-term stability. Mane’s early exposure to top-flight football is a compelling credential; he has already played 28 Premier League games at just 18, and the experience gained from those appearances is substantial. This is a strong argument for Liverpool to pursue his services.
Historically, signing players with little or no Premier League experience has carried risk. Yet, as Liverpool aims to reclaim their position at the summit and compete for silverware again, they need players who are proven performers at the highest level and who can contribute immediately. Without such signings, it’s difficult to see Iraola delivering the progress needed, particularly after the recent decision to part ways with Arne Slot following disappointing results. The path to sustained success for Liverpool hinges on smart recruitment that blends homegrown talent with seasoned professionals who can adapt quickly to the rigors of the top flight.
