Oddsmakers aren’t predicting a breakout season for the Minnesota Vikings in 2026, with many forecasting them to finish last in the NFC North. Yet this week Bleacher Report suggested Minnesota could surprise as a playoff contender, aligning with the sentiment of a broad swath of fans. The Vikings added Kyler Murray in the spring, and there’s a growing sense that he could become the key to a postseason run—and perhaps even inaugurate the franchise’s first playoff victory since 2019.
In a photo featured by BR, Vikings wide receiver Jordan Addison is shown securing a late-quarter catch at U.S. Bank Stadium as Baltimore’s defense closes in during a tense late-season matchup in Minneapolis. On November 9, 2025, Addison provided Minnesota with another downfield option while navigating traffic against the Ravens in front of a home crowd during a pivotal closing stretch.
BR: Vikings Could Be Surprise Contender
Alex Kay included the Vikings among five teams on his list of potential sleepers. He pointed to the addition of Jauan Jennings in free agency as a major upgrade to what could be one of the league’s best receiving corps. “Whoever lines up under center will have a wealth of options at their disposal in Jennings, Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson, and perennial All-Pro Justin Jefferson.”
He also acknowledged the question marks along the offensive line but noted that Minnesota addressed some concerns by drafting Caleb Tiernan on Day 2 and bringing in veteran Ryan Van Demark in free agency, providing the coaching staff with more lineup flexibility if needed. He added that there should be no major worries about the defense, which has been a source of stability.
Kay also gave a stamp of approval to the other teams in contention for the year, citing the Atlanta Falcons, Las Vegas Raiders, New Orleans Saints, and Tennessee Titans as squads with legitimate playoff upside.
“Brian Flores is among the best coordinators in football, and his unit kept the Vikings competitive despite a lackluster offensive showing in 2025. Minnesota finished last season ranked No. 7 in scoring and No. 3 in total defense, and with five prospects selected in the first five rounds of the 2026 draft—led by first-round edge rusher Caleb Banks—the defense could be even more formidable,” Kay argued. “While the 2026 Vikings’ fate will hinge on quarterback play, the rest of the pieces are already in place for a potential third playoff appearance in six seasons under coach Kevin O’Connell.”
What It Will Take
Here’s the plan Kay outlined for the Vikings to turn his optimistic forecast into reality:
– A healthy, productive performance from the quarterback position and efficient play from Murray or J.J. McCarthy. Minnesota finished 9-8 last year while ranking near the bottom of the league in quarterback EPA/Play, and a modest improvement could push them into double-digit wins.
– No major drop-off on defense. Since Brian Flores arrived in Minnesota, the team has ranked consistently high in EPA per play. Maintaining that level—or getting even better—will be crucial to counterbalance any struggles on offense and keep the team competitive in tighter contests.
– Continued offensive and defensive cohesion. If the offensive line stabilizes and the supporting cast around the quarterback remains potent, the Vikings could maximize the talent at their disposal and make a compelling late-season push.
The question remains whether Minnesota can translate potential into sustained success. The path is there, but execution at quarterback, along with keeping the defense on an even keel, will determine if the Vikings can claw their way into the playoffs and, perhaps, secure their first postseason win in years.
