Brentford sign Callum Wilson on free transfer

The 34-year-old delivered seven goals and recorded one assist across 35 appearances in all competitions last season, with 12 of those outings coming as starts. Brentford’s head coach Keith Andrews weighed in on the signing, saying: “Callum is a familiar name to many; he has been a Premier League goalscorer for a long time. He broadens our options in that part of the pitch and will bring valuable experience to Igor Thiago and Kaye Furo. He possesses that instinct to score and that experience around the training ground. This is another very good signing for us.”
Wilson’s career began with Coventry City, his hometown club, where he joined as a schoolboy and made his first-team debut at 17. After loan spells at non-league Kettering Town and Tamworth, he established himself in Coventry’s first team in the 2013/14 season, netting 22 goals. His performances that year earned him a place in the League One PFA Team of the Year and Coventry’s Player of the Year accolade. In the summer of 2014, Wilson moved to Bournemouth and helped the Cherries secure promotion to the Premier League in his first season with the club, finishing as the club’s top scorer with 20 Championship goals. He even hit a renowned Premier League hat-trick for Bournemouth against West Ham in August 2015, just his third top-flight appearance, and he went on to score 67 goals in six seasons for the club.
In September 2020, Wilson transferred to Newcastle United and continued to find the net regularly in the Premier League, including a personal best of 18 league goals in the 2022/23 campaign. This level of form earned him a place in England’s squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, alongside current Bees teammate Jordan Henderson, where he assisted Jack Grealish’s goal in the Three Lions’ group-stage victory over Iran. Wilson later tasted EFL Cup success with Newcastle in 2025, coming on as a substitute in the final as they defeated Liverpool.
On the international stage, Wilson has won nine England caps and scored twice, debuting for the senior side against the USA at Wembley in November 2018. His experiences at the highest level of club and international football bring breadth to Brentford’s forward options, offering a blend of goal-scoring prowess, versatility, and leadership that can benefit the squad across a demanding season. With a proven track record across the Premier League and English football’s top competitions, Wilson’s arrival is poised to bolster Brentford’s attacking options and provide valuable competition for places in the squad.
