Mets unlikely to move Jonah Tong ahead of 2026 MLB trade deadline: report

Jonah Tong’s up-and-down journey in Triple-A hasn’t swayed the Mets’ view of him. According to Will Sammon of The Athletic, New York still regards the top pitching prospect with high esteem. Even as the club pursues pitchers with club control ahead of the August 3 trading deadline, Sammon indicates that the Mets are unlikely to include Tong in any deal. People familiar with the team’s thinking told him that the 23-year-old starter would need to be valued like a top-50 prospect, with players they genuinely covet returning in exchange.
Tong has seemingly regressed since his standout 2025 season in the minors. The young right-hander has struggled as he works to refine his arsenal after a rocky debut last year, posting only two scoreless appearances across 14 attempts and finishing with an ugly 5.90 ERA. He has allowed 13 home runs on the season, walked 38 batters, and struck out 74 over 61.0 innings. While Tong demonstrated some positives while operating behind an opener after being recalled by the Mets, those struggles persisted after he rejoined Syracuse’s rotation, yielding 20 runs (16 earned) over his last five starts.
