Cohen Havill’s high school career at Memorial was marked by exceptional growth, leadership, and sustained impact within a program known for its size and prestige. Arriving as a freshman in 2022, Havill faced the daunting task of carving out a role in a soccer environment as expansive and demanding as Memorial’s. Four years later, he not only carved out a niche but emerged as a defining figure for the Tigers, balancing personal achievement with a deep commitment to the collective success of the team.
Havill’s senior season crowned him the 2026 Banterra Bank Outstanding Male SIAC Athlete of the Year. He led Memorial with 26 goals and shared the team’s top assist tally with eight, a testament to his well-rounded contribution on the field. His performances also earned recognition beyond the school level, as he became a finalist for the Indiana Gatorade Player of the Year award. While the final chapter of his high school season did not unfold exactly as hoped, Havill looks back on his time with pride and gratitude, confident that his efforts helped strengthen the Tigers’ program. This latest accolade further highlights the significant impact he has had under the leadership of coach Bill Vieth.
“Being named the top athlete and having the opportunity to represent my school and soccer program reflects what Memorial stands for,” Havill said. “The community here is excellent for development, and I’m incredibly grateful for the four years I’ve spent in this environment.” Like every year, Memorial’s roster evolved, but the 2022–23 season followed a notable arc: the Tigers had just secured a Class 2A state title, setting a high bar for the team’s expectations and performances.
Havill was chosen to captain the squad, a role that demanded more than shouting directions from the sidelines. He was responsible for guiding and stabilizing the emotional currents of the team, a challenging shift that Havill embraced as a growth opportunity he would not trade. The responsibility of leadership came with its own set of lessons, reinforcing the development path he had imagined for himself and the team.
Even with the spotlight often trained on Memorial’s prolific scorer, Havill did not waver. His concerns were game outcomes and team success rather than individual statistics. He understood that goals are the product of collective effort, not solos. He appreciated the balance between personal achievement and the broader objective of winning games, recognizing that every goal was the result of a 90-minute team effort, including countless hours of practice and the unwavering commitment of every teammate.
The season’s competitive arc included a heartbreak at the sectional final, where a 1-0 loss to North closed the curtain on Havill’s high school playing days in Memorial blue. Yet the outcome did not erase the positive memories or the team’s accomplishments. Memorial captured the SIAC title for the first time since 2020, and a 3-1 win over Castle—an occasion in which Havill both scored and assisted—became a standout memory for him and his teammates. Those moments, Havill noted, will remain with the team for years to come, illustrating the highs and the shared experiences that define a championship run.
Havill’s time at Memorial, however, was about more than final scores. It was a period of maturation, not only in his technical and tactical understanding of the game but also in his leadership and emotional intelligence. Becoming captain reinforced that leadership is as much about guiding teammates through ups and downs as it is about delivering goals and assists. He learned to manage and respond to the team’s emotional dynamics, a facet of sports leadership that cannot be manufactured in a classroom or on a highlight reel.
Looking ahead, Havill intends to carry these lessons beyond high school competition. While the Tigers’ road to future successes will take new shapes and face new opponents, Havill’s experiences at Memorial have prepared him to approach adversity with resilience and a team-first mentality. He understands that the path to sustained excellence is marked not only by individual accolades but also by the capacity to lift peers, to endure setbacks, and to persevere through challenges with a steady, composed approach.
In reflecting on his four years, Havill emphasizes the all-encompassing nature of a high school athletic career: the on-field triumphs, the responsibilities of leadership, and the personal growth that comes from navigating both expected outcomes and unforeseen hurdles. His story is one of dedication to a program that rewarded hard work, unity, and perseverance, and it stands as a testament to how a high school athlete can leave an enduring legacy on a community and a program that values more than wins and losses.
