Giants’ ace Logan Webb deletes X account after bitter exchanges with reporter, fans

After a tough outing on Wednesday night, San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Logan Webb took to social media, only to delete his account shortly after. The episode began when KNBR’s Jack Loder posted a video on X reacting to the Giants’ 10-0 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. Webb, who pitched seven innings, allowed five runs in the first inning after Kazuma Okamoto delivered a grand slam for Toronto.
Loder’s video opened with a blunt assessment: “The game started at 12:45, by 12:49 the game was over.” He then directed his critique at Webb, challenging the ace label many fans and analysts expect from a pitcher of his caliber. “When someone’s supposed to be your ace, you think they’re gonna give you the best chance to win every week,” Loder said. “I’ve said over the years, he’s been a great Giant, like I’ve really appreciated his Giant tenure, but there’s always been a little bit lacking. I wish he was more of an ace, because Lord knows this team has needed him so many instances over the last few years.” In the same video, Loder suggested Webb might search his own name on Twitter in the wake of the loss, noting that such a move “is never a great look.”
Indeed, Webb appeared to see the video and reacted within the hour. He commented on Loder’s post with a pointed barb: “You know what’s sad is they allow people like you in the locker room.” Screenshots from multiple outlets captured his reply. Loder responded by quoting Webb’s comment on his timeline, tying the moment to the team’s state after a 10-0 defeat that left them 16 games below .500. Webb did not stop there; he continued to engage, trading barbs with Loder and addressing other fans in the comments, a social-media back-and-forth that drew parallels to high-profile athletes known for direct online exchanges.
The exchanges soon inveigled public attention, prompting a larger discussion about Webb’s performance and leadership in a season that has hardly gone as hoped for the Giants. KNBR’s Adam Copeland entered the thread, prompting Webb to retort with a curt “Who are you?” The online diplomacy only fueled more comment and speculation about Webb’s mindset and the club’s direction. In the hours that followed, Webb continued to interact with followers in the comments, echoing a pattern that has become familiar in the digital era where professional athletes engage directly with fans and critics alike.
Late Wednesday night, Webb’s X account appeared to go dark, with posts— including his initial response to Loder—now showing a notice that reads, “This Post is from an account that no longer exists.” The move marked a quiet retreat from a highly scrutinized moment and left fans and media pondering the pitcher’s next steps.
For San Francisco, the season has been a rollercoaster with a mix of bright spots and persistent struggles. The Giants have contended with a string of disappointing losses and a controversial Pride Night episode that only amplified the season’s turbulence. Wednesday’s 10-0 defeat to the Blue Jays underscored deeper issues: a fragile bullpen that allowed five runs in the late innings and a near-historic near-miss against Dylan Cease that threatened to become a near no-hitter, highlighting a team that has seldom found consistent footing.
As the Giants move forward, they scheduled a four-game series against the Colorado Rockies starting Thursday, hoping a much-needed jolt could help them regain some momentum before the season spirals further. Webb, who earned a spot on the National League All-Star roster in a season full of strong contenders, has been one of the team’s brighter lights, even as his output has lagged behind his peak performances in previous campaigns. Whether the online controversy will have any lasting impact on his role or on the club’s broader strategy remains to be seen, but the episode has already become a talking point for fans hoping for a turnaround.
In the broader context, this incident underscored how social media can amplify internal team debates, sometimes overshadowing the on-field realities. The Giants’ 2024 campaign, with its mix of promise and frustration, continues to unfold, and how the team responds in the coming days and weeks will likely shape perceptions of Webb’s leadership, their pitching staff, and the franchise’s ability to weather adversity.
