“Do You Want to Play Good Basketball?”: Stephen Curry Reveals His Pitch to LeBron James to Join the Warriors

The Golden State Warriors understand that time isn’t on their side. With every passing day, the chance to pair Stephen Curry with LeBron James seems to fade as rival suitors gain traction. Yet when Curry finally faced questions about luring the four-time NBA champion to the Dubs, he didn’t tout contracts; he talked about basketball. “I feel like any place he calls and says, ‘I wanna play there,’ he moves mountains to make it happen. And I know we’re in that boat as well,” Curry said, reflecting on his pitch to James while addressing the press at the preview for the ACC tournament in South Lake Tahoe. “The pitch is, you wanna play good basketball and be around people who know how to play the game? Hopefully, raise our floor and our competitiveness this year.”
Curry added a lighter note to the pitch, reminding that there’s good golf in the Bay Area. “But, you know, we are an organization that’s been there; he knows that, and that’s really self-explanatory. It’s just a matter of where he sees himself fit. And at the end of the day, that’s up to him.”
The recruiting push goes beyond the court. Draymond Green remains one of LeBron James’ closest friends in the league. A few days earlier, Green opted out of his $27.7 million deal to give the team more financial flexibility. The two veterans also spent time together on a golf trip to Puerto Rico before free agency, fueling hope for the Dub Nation.
The Warriors’ storied pedigree also speaks loudly, as Curry noted. Under Steve Kerr, the Dubs have captured four championships in six Finals appearances over the last 11 years, a transformative and efficient system that reshaped the league. Curry’s message reflected that history: rather than promising James a lavish contract, he stressed an organization built around winning. That selling point, however, now confronts a tough reality.
A recent report from Shams Charania indicated that the Warriors have fallen behind the competition in the race for James. The Cavaliers, Heat, and 76ers have gained momentum, leaving Golden State no longer viewed as the top-tier destination. Anthony Slater added that the Warriors’ optimism has waned in the days since, signaling that they are looking for a Plan B as top free-agent targets continue to slip away. Many view the Cavaliers as the sentimental favorite given the arc of James’ career and its potential bookend.
Steph acknowledged that reality when pressed about what would happen if James chose another destination. “It’s TBD because that’s what free agency is about,” Curry said. “It’s great to get KP back; it’s great to get Mel back. We’re in a very unique situation because Jimmy’s hurt, and Moses is hurt, and gonna miss a good amount of the season.” Curry emphasized that the team’s immediate focus is simply surviving until the roster returns to full strength, a pragmatic note that underscored the realities of a franchise navigating an uncertain off-season.
