LAS VEGAS — The Philadelphia 76ers pulled off the offseason’s most consequential move, landing Jaylen Brown in a blockbuster trade with the rival Boston Celtics. The deal brings a five-time All-Star, a 2024 finals MVP, and a player who just posted a 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists season while earning All-NBA Second Team honors. In effect, Philadelphia is swapping out a veteran like Paul George, who is 36, for Brown, a 29-year-old with a renewed sense of purpose after parting ways with the Celtics. By all accounts, the Sixers appear to have landed the more desirable side of this high-stakes swap, though of course the real verdict will come when the ball is tipped and the games begin.
Rookie guard Labaron Philon Jr. weighed in on the Sixers pairing Brown with the team after Thursday’s summer league win in Las Vegas. “I would just say what he can do for the whole program really just makes it easy for everybody else,” Philon said of Brown. “He has that championship DNA, and I feel like, as a young guy, that’s somebody you want to look up to, somebody you want to learn from. I mean, somebody that has already been in that moment, and he can help all the other guys, too, that haven’t reached that level yet. Help us get over that hump.”
The Sixers have not advanced beyond the second round since 2001, when MVP Allen Iverson led the way. The Celtics captured the 2024 title with Brown leading the charge, and now Brown will attempt to guide Philadelphia to its first championship since 1983. Philon noted that the addition could be transformative for the organization, especially as he and his teammates push to rise to the next level.
“So really, just with him coming in, I feel like it’s going to be special,” Philon added. “We’re going to go at it in practice, and he’s going to push me, and I’m going to push him to get to the next level. Everyone’s just getting better one day at a time.”
Of course, the incoming news could still feel surreal for players who only recently learned of Brown’s arrival. It was a move that appeared to materialize out of thin air, but that’s the NBA: a league where anything can happen. Philon already understands that truth firsthand. “I mean, it’s basketball,” he said. “Things happen. You’ve got to be ready for the next thing to come. So, when we got him, I feel like it was a really great pickup, but definitely just like it’s the NBA, so really just about staying even-keeled and being ready to play.”
This reimagined version of the Sixers’ summer narrative centers on Brown’s arrival and the potential ripple effects across the roster. The team’s front office has invested in a player who brings star power, versatility, and a proven track record of success at the highest levels. Whether this bold move translates into tangible postseason advancement remains to be seen, but the excitement in Philadelphia is palpable as the season approaches.
