Jaylen Brown Takes Subtle Parting Shot At Boston Celtics

The decision by the Boston Celtics to trade Jaylen Brown sparked intense controversy. With Jayson Tatum sidelined for most of the 2025-26 season due to a torn Achilles, Brown delivered what many considered the best year of his career. He ranked sixth in MVP voting and helped push Boston to the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference. Yet the combination of his looming supermax contract, an anticipated two-year extension, and a style of play that reportedly didn’t align with Boston’s system all contributed to the surprising departure. Brad Stevens traded Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Paul George, two first-round picks, and two second-round picks.
Brown’s reaction has suggested he’s not entirely satisfied with how things unfolded. In a recent livestream with iShowSpeed, he urged the popular streamer to avoid pursuing a career in professional basketball, arguing that loyalty is scarce in the league. “I just got traded,” Brown told iShowSpeed. “They packed me up, bro. It’s a crazy business, bro. Don’t become a basketball player. There’s no loyalty…They packed me up. Sayonara. I’m out of here.” The comments appear to reflect Brown’s perspective on how Boston handled his exit. Reports indicated that Stevens previously toyed with the idea of trading Brown to bring in Giannis Antetokounmpo before pivoting to other trade discussions.
During Boston’s opening Summer League practice in Las Vegas, head coach Joe Mazzulla addressed the franchise’s decision to move on from Brown. “I think we actually are still processing it,” Mazzulla said. “Obviously, when something like that happens, it’s not all black and white. There’s a lot of stuff that goes into it on and off the court. The part that I hope gets talked about more and the part that we want to focus on the most is really just the respect, the appreciation, and the gratitude for what he did for the Celtics, for 10 years.” Brown had been a central part of Mazzulla’s rotation during the Celtics’ 2024 NBA Championship run. Now, Mazzulla faces the challenge of building a system around Jayson Tatum, with Paul George operating as a complementary piece.
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, speaking on a recent episode of First Take, noted that Brown’s contract situation and an anticipated extension were significant factors in Boston’s decision to move him. “In the case of Jaylen Brown, the Celtics believed that Jaylen Brown was going to be seeking a contract extension this summer,” Windhorst explained. “And if they gave him that extension, not only did they think they weren’t getting $57 million in value out of him, but then he’d become untradable.” Stevens had hinted at a similar line of thinking when addressing reporters on July 6, suggesting that the path forward looked more complex given the cap implications and the high salary threshold. The Celtics’ strategic calculus centered on balancing player value, future flexibility, and the evolving make-up of a roster now anchored by Tatum and supported by George in a new on-court framework.
