Sports Illustrated ranked Trent McDuffie as a top-10 CB

When the Los Angeles Rams pursued cornerback Trent McDuffie, they landed an All-Pro talent who might still be entering the early stages of his prime. McDuffie’s deal to join the Rams was a landmark contract for a defensive back, and it locks him in for what should be his best years. With two Super Bowl rings already under his belt and three appearances to his name, the Rams are counting on him to bring a steady, veteran presence to a defense intent on maintaining aerial dominance in a league that increasingly prioritizes the passing game.
Sports Illustrated’s Karl Rasmussen ranked McDuffie as the seventh-best corner in the NFL, a nod that underscores the value the Rams secured. His standing among his peers suggests the Rams landed a premium player at a surprisingly favorable price. This offseason, Los Angeles made a bold bet on McDuffie by trading away one of their first-round picks to acquire him, then signing him to a four-year, $124 million extension that makes him the highest-paid corner in NFL history.
Since being drafted in the first round in 2022, McDuffie has been impressive. He has allowed just 6.2 yards per target, placing him among the league’s better performers at his position and contributing to a strong track record as a tackler. Notably, his eight forced fumbles since 2022 lead all cornerbacks, illustrating his playmaking impact when the ball is in the air. His 2023 season featured a missed-tackle rate of 6%, a solid figure for a cornerback and one that helps minimize big plays when the ball is targeted in his direction.
The trade that brought McDuffie to Los Angeles included the 29th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, plus a 2026 fifth- and sixth-round pick, and a 2027 third-round selection. Among the top ten cornerbacks listed by various evaluators, eight were first-round picks by their current teams, making McDuffie’s acquisition stand out as a shrewd move. The other top-10 corner was Sauce Gardner, who came to the Indianapolis Colts in a blockbuster deal that sent Adonai Mitchell and two first-round picks in exchange.
By choosing McDuffie, the Rams paid less than the Colts did for a similarly high-caliber player, while also avoiding the uncertainty that comes with drafting an unproven prospect to address a pressing need.
