ESPN updates Michigan football 2027 recruiting ranking

Michigan’s 2027 football recruiting has settled into a quieter phase, with the Wolverines carrying 20 pledges and only a handful of targets still in play. The staff took a hit at cornerback when five-star prospect Joshua Dobson chose to stay closer to home and commit to South Carolina, but Michigan rebounded by drawing four-star corner Monsanna Torbert away from Ohio State, even though Torbert hails from Ohio. On Saturday, Michigan is aiming to announce a decision from four-star offensive lineman Lincoln Mageo, who comes from Oceanside, California, and is set to make his choice public.
With 20 commitments in the class, ESPN has updated Michigan’s recruiting ranking. The last time we checked in—and while ESPN rankings can be updated periodically—Michigan was positioned in the top 10. Currently, the Wolverines sit at No. 11 overall. 11. Michigan Wolverines Previous ranking: 11. SC Next 300 commits: 13. Top offensive prospect: QB Kamden Lopati. Top defensive prospect: CB Tavares Harrington.
As Michigan enters a new era under head coach Kyle Whittingham, who has drawn on his Utah connections to help shape this cycle, Kamden Lopati—an accomplished quarterback from West High School in Salt Lake City—has displayed a high football IQ, exceptional field vision, a strong arm, and solid mobility. A potential key target for Lopati is wide receiver Quentin Burrell, a big, physically imposing playmaker with excellent speed and body control from nearby Illinois, who could form a dynamic pairing with Lopati on the field.
The offense should also benefit from the arrival of SC Next 300 tight end Colt Lumpris, who flipped from Alabama. Lumpris stands 6-foot-6 and weighs 240 pounds, presenting a challenging matchup for defenses with his ability to run well and use his size to secure contested catches. All three players—Lopati, Burrell, and Lumpris—moved up the board in the June SC Next 300 update, signaling a rising interest and potential impact for Michigan’s offense.
Running back Tyson Robinson, out of Mississippi, adds another versatile offensive weapon to the class. He brings power, vision, and a demonstrated willingness to work hard and learn from evaluators during in-person sessions. To protect and maximize their new offensive weapons, the Wolverines have secured several offensive linemen, including SC Next 300 prospects Sidney Rouleau and Jakari Lipsey, as well as Louis Esposito. Esposito has shown notable growth over the past year, improving his build and execution and earning OL MVP honors at the Under Armour Chicago camp stop.
In the Big Ten landscape, Michigan sits third among conference programs in ESPN’s rankings, trailing behind No. 4 Oregon and No. 6 Ohio State. At this stage, barring a late re-rank, it seems unlikely that Michigan will sign a five-star prospect in this cycle. Nevertheless, the class features several high-profile commitments that could make a meaningful difference on the field, including quarterback Kamden Lopati, safety Tavares Harrington, tackle Jakari Lipsey, and the newly added Monsanna Torbert, among others. The Wolverines also boast a top-tier receiver in Quentin Burrell, and there remains the possibility of flipping Dakota Guerrant from Oregon based on Michigan’s ongoing offensive performance and development this season.
This overview reflects a broader view of Michigan’s 2027 recruiting trajectory and its implications for the program’s future, capturing the strategic moves that have defined this cycle.
