Cardiff keen to stage Fury-Joshua fight

Principality Stadium bosses have signaled their readiness to host the proposed heavyweight showdown between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, with the UK-basis all-British bout being steered by Saudi power broker Turki Alalshikh, who is coordinating plans to maximize global television audiences. Although Alalshikh would prefer the fight to occur in Britain, the prime objective is to time the event to reach the widest possible worldwide audience, particularly in the United States.
If promoters target US prime time, the main event could conceivably kick off as late as 04:00 GMT. Such late scheduling would pose a challenge for Wembley Stadium, the favored venue, which would require special permission from the local London authority to stay open beyond the usual 23:00 curfew. In the event Wembley cannot remain open, the Welsh Rugby Union has stepped forward with a contingency: the Principality Stadium in Cardiff could host the bout, ensuring the fight still goes ahead on a schedule that suits global television audiences while preserving the integrity of the event.
There is precedent for late-night boxing at the Principality Stadium. In November 2007, Joe Calzaghe fought Mikkel Kessler at 02:00, illustrating that the venue can accommodate late-night starts. Joshua himself has fought in Cardiff before, securing wins over Carlos Takam in October 2017 and Joseph Parker in 2018, experiences the city’s boxing-favorable atmosphere and facilities could leverage for a high-profile heavyweight clash.
A spokesperson for the Welsh Rugby Union, which owns and operates the Principality Stadium, expressed strong enthusiasm for hosting the bout: “We’d be delighted to host this fight. We are very keen to attract more boxing to the stadium, which has a rich history in the sport, enhanced by its closable roof, unrivalled sightlines, and unique city-centre location.” The WRU note, however, that any scheduling would need to harmonize with Wales’ international rugby commitments in the Nations Championship, facing Japan, New Zealand, and Australia in November.
Last month, Eddie Hearn, the Matchroom promoter who represents Joshua, dismissed speculation that the fight could be staged in the United States. Hearn stressed that the current agreement, signed by all involved parties, designates the bout to take place in the United Kingdom.
Both Fury and Joshua are slated to return to the ring later this month ahead of what could be a headline-making encounter later in the year. Fury, the former WBC heavyweight champion, 37, is set to face Poland’s Mariusz Wach in Thailand on 24 July, while Joshua, the two-time world heavyweight champion at 36, will take on Kristian Prenga in Saudi Arabia the following day. With negotiations continuing and venues weighing logistical considerations, all parties are working toward delivering a blockbuster showdown that captures the imaginations of boxing fans worldwide while navigating stadium curfews, stadium availability, and the demands of international television audiences.
