Johanfran Garcia no longer has his older brother with him in the Boston Red Sox system. Boston traded Jhostynxon — known as “The Password” — to the Pittsburgh Pirates this offseason, but little brother Johanfran is still around, and he’s breaking out. Johanfran, a catcher, had never played at Double-A before this season. Boston sent him directly to Portland out of spring, and he hasn’t missed a beat. The 21-year-old is batting .299 through action on July 9, with eight doubles and 12 home runs in 52 games, good for an .844 OPS. This is already the most games Garcia has played at a single level in a season during his time in the Red Sox system, and it marks the most homers he’s tallied at one level in a single season. Last year, Garcia finished the year with 12 home runs, spread across High-A and the Florida Complex League. It’s incredibly encouraging that Garcia looks completely comfortable at Double-A despite never having played there before, suggesting a talented hitter who can quickly adjust. Johanfran has been in the Red Sox system since he was signed as a teenager from Venezuela. He debuted in the Dominican Summer League in 2022 and took a couple of seasons to begin climbing the minor league ladder. His success at Double-A, though, seems to have given Johanfran Garcia a real chance of earning consideration in Boston’s future plans. It’s hard to gauge the defensive prowess of a catcher in the lower minors, but a strong bat can ease the expectations on his glove. He may not get to share an MLB field with his brother in Boston, but if Johanfran makes it to the majors at all, he’ll join Jhostynxon in entering that exclusive club of major league ballplayers.
