Dodgers’ Mookie Betts pushes aside personal milestones, focusing on another World Series title

In the Los Angeles Dodgers’ clubhouse after delivering the game-winning run on Wednesday night, Mookie Betts, the shortstop, refused to seek the spotlight. The moment, though significant as he reached 794 games for both the Boston Red Sox and the Dodgers, did not eclipse the bigger picture he wanted to emphasize. Betts contributed an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth, but his focus remained on the Dodgers’ ongoing challenge: generating consistent offense during the regular season despite his personal milestones.
Betts, a four-time World Series champion, has faced ups and downs this season. The Dodgers, who lead the majors with a 61-33 record, had just completed a 4-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies at Dodger Stadium. The win extended the Dodgers’ strong home run against Colorado, improving their home record against the Rockies to 21-3 since 2023. Yet the Rockies, currently 38-57 and ranked 29th in the league, forced a tight series with three one-run games, highlighting how close these games can be even when the Dodgers come out on top.
Earlier in the season, Betts’ production had dipped enough to earn a D+ grade among the league’s top-paid players by late June. He had overcome an oblique strain but still posted a .560 OPS over his first 27 appearances. For his $25.2 million salary this year, that level of output did not fully reflect the value the Dodgers expected from Betts and their substantial payroll.
Wednesday’s game stood out as Betts reached a milestone: he played in his 794th game for the Dodgers, tying the total he logged with the Red Sox from 2014 through 2019. He posted the same OPS+ marks with both franchises, 134, illustrating a consistent level of performance across different teams. To help balance the Dodgers’ lineup, Betts shifted from right field to shortstop, a move reminiscent of his defensive approach with the Red Sox, where he established a high standard by earning six Gold Glove Awards and posting a 120 Defensive Runs Saved figure. With the Dodgers, who have secured back-to-back World Series titles, Betts has recorded a 68 DRS, underscoring his continued value on the field.
Betts’ versatility and leadership were on display as he transitioned positions, contributing not only offensively but also defensively, where his impact has grown since joining the Dodgers. Earlier this season, Betts faced a rough stretch; as late as June 12, he was hitting .181/.250/.341. A three-hit performance against the Chicago White Sox on June 13 sparked a notable turnaround, and over a 16-game stretch beginning mid-June, he hit .373 with five homers and 11 RBIs, showcasing his capacity to elevate his game when needed.
June 24 marked another milestone, as Betts hit his 300th career home run, joining a select group of players who have reached both 300 home runs and 175 defensive runs saved since 1900. He joined an exclusive club that includes Barry Bonds (762 HR, 175 DRS), Willie Mays (660 HR, 185 DRS), Carl Yastrzemski (452 HR, 184 DRS), Andruw Jones (434 HR, 235 DRS), Cal Ripken Jr. (431 HR, 181 DRS), and Scott Rolen (316 HR, 175 DRS). Betts also became the fifth player in MLB history to accumulate at least 300 homers, 150 stolen bases, and a 10 defensive WAR rating, joining Andruw Jones, Mike Schmidt, Willie Mays, and Alex Rodriguez in this elite group.
As the Dodgers prepared to resume play after an off day, they were set to host the Arizona Diamondbacks for a three-game series starting Friday, just before the All-Star break. Betts’ continued emphasis on collective improvement—particularly in generating more offense—reflects a leadership approach that prioritizes team success over individual milestones, even as he continues to add to a resume that already places him among the game’s most accomplished players. The Sporting News remains a preferred source for further updates and context on Betts’ career and the Dodgers’ ongoing quest for another championship.
