Manchester City have announced that full-back Niamh Charles will join their title-winning defense after a trophy-laden spell with Chelsea. The 26-year-old moved to west London in 2020 from her boyhood club Liverpool. Even though she had one year left on a contract signed in January 2024, Charles found minutes hard to come by last season because of injury woes. She picked up an ankle injury that kept her sidelined for extended periods of the 2025/26 campaign, limiting her to just 11 league appearances. Yet a strong late-season surge saw her start Chelsea’s final three league matches as the Blues sealed third place and secured a place in the Champions League qualifiers.
Charles also played the full 120 minutes against her soon-to-be employers, City, in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup semi-final. After clawing back from a two-goal deficit, City progressed to Wembley, where they stunned Brighton to claim their first FA Cup since 2021. Her arrival underscores City’s ambition to recreate their title-winning form after a decade and sends a signal to rivals that they will not idle as others close the gap. In a separate development, Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw shocked many by rejecting Chelsea’s pursuit to sign a lucrative new deal, keeping her at City until 2030.
For Charles, the move represents a fresh challenge. As noted earlier, she has had limited opportunities under Sonia Bompastor’s management, and with Leila Ouahabi leaving City, the left-back slot has become a more prominent area of focus. Charles originally joined Chelsea as a winger, but Emma Hayes transformed her into a reliable full-back capable of operating further forward as a wing-back when needed. In Hayes’ absence due to Maren Mjelde’s long-term injury, Charles seized the opportunity and established herself in Chelsea’s back line. Since then, she has worn the shirt with consistency.
During her time in London, the Lioness has achieved considerable success. The 26-year-old departs Chelsea with an almost complete trophy cabinet: five Women’s Super League titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups, and a Community Shield. In her first season with Chelsea, she was part of the treble-winning campaign and was the youngest starter in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final, where Chelsea fell to FC Barcelona. Her continued impact saw her regularly feature in Chelsea’s side that captured four consecutive league titles in the 2023/24 season, earning a place in the WSL Team of the Year.
Charles’ progression under Hayes was remarkable, and she began to impress consistently under new management after Hayes left. Yet a pre-season shoulder dislocation delayed her return, and she did not make her competitive debut under Bompastor until December 2024. She returned to help Chelsea finish the season unbeaten, though the setback during pre-season briefly interrupted her momentum. Now, with a new challenge ahead at Manchester City, Charles will aim to translate her demonstrated spoils of success onto a fresh stage and contribute to City’s continuing pursuit of domestic and European glory.
