Arkansas coach Ryan Silverfield faces an absolute gauntlet in Year 1

ESPN’s Football Power Index has updated its rankings of the toughest schedules in college football as we head into the 2026 season, and not surprisingly, the SEC dominates the list. With the league expanding from eight conference games to nine this year, FPI projects far fewer easy games for SEC programs. Nine of the 10 hardest schedules and 14 of the 15 toughest belong to SEC teams, underscoring the league’s depth and the brutal road SEC teams must navigate in 2026.
At the very top of the rankings is the Arkansas Razorbacks, led by first-year head coach Ryan Silverfield, whose schedule is projected to be the toughest in the nation entering the season. Here is ESPN’s FPI top 20 list of the toughest schedules for 2026.
Arkansas may start off with a comparatively light assignment in Week 1, facing FCS opponent North Alabama, but the real challenges begin in Week 2. The Razorbacks hit the road for their first true test of 2026 by taking on Utah, a program that won 11 games last season. That road trip is followed quickly by a home confrontation in Week 3 against what figures to be a top-five Georgia squad, setting a steep early hurdle for the Hogs.
After an uneven Week 4 bye or layup against Tulsa, Arkansas enters a brutal stretch of SEC competition. The schedule includes marquee showdowns against Texas A&M, Tennessee, Missouri, Texas, and LSU. There aren’t many guaranteed wins on the slate, with the most winnable conference games seemingly a home date with South Carolina and road trips to Vanderbilt and Auburn, all of which appear in the middle to late part of October or later.
Given the daunting gauntlet and the fact that Silverfield inherits a roster that went 2-10 a year ago, tempered expectations would be prudent. This is a heavily portal-influenced squad taking on a conference that may be deeper than ever, making it difficult to forecast a smooth ascent in Year 1 for the Hogs. If Arkansas can navigate the non-power-conference portions of its schedule and steal one or two toss-up games, a bowl appearance could still be in reach, but the margin for error is slim.
To reach a bowl game, Arkansas would likely need to sweep the clearly winnable non-conference encounters and secure at least one upset victory, perhaps against Utah or one of the upper-tier SEC opponents. The path to postseason play would demand a level of efficiency and resilience that Silverfield will be tasked with delivering right away, as the schedule’s rigidity leaves little room for missteps.
Silverfield has his hands full in his first year, and while winning four or five games would not exactly ignite the fan base with exuberance, such a result would symbolize meaningful progress given the hurdles on the schedule. The 2026 slate demands a steady, methodical climb for Arkansas, and any improvement would be viewed through the lens of how well the program adjusts to a tougher conference calendar.
